This is an example of my work, taken from a 63 pages long Story I never really finished. (containing around 50k words)
The characters are humans with animal like traits or anomalys (Horns, Cat Ears, Wings, you name it). They are around 17-18 years.
After about an hour of straight walking, talking and joking we finally arrived in a big cave. It was dived into golden, soft and warm light of the fire from torches on the walls and ceiling. There where 12 people waiting in the cave for us. The all immediately stopped talking and looked towards us. Jason and I stepped next to each other and placed our right fist on our hearts. “Hail Terra!” I said and Jason did the same. Everyone now stood up and copied us. Then, everyone sat back down and continued their talks or threw another greeting towards us or waved at us. It was some kind of Parole, if you don’t respond to it, then you have a problem. It’s to make sure, we are not spies using yet unknown abilities to look different or anything similar. After a few more minutes of casual talking, I stood up and said loud and clearly: “Okay everyone, listen up! We have a problem! In a platoon fight between me and Jason their commander showed up and killed all of the other children. So, we need to reorganize all planned show attacks on his platoon.” You could hear some whispers going around and Jason had a sad face for a second. But his face cleared up and said: “Yea, he’s right, but thanks to him, Mira, my Girlfriend survived. I also didn’t really like the others and they may have stood in our way in the worst case so it’s not too big of a deal!” Another whisper ran through the crowd. “So, but there is something even more important to say…” I began but got cut off by a sound I never heard down here before. The crowd was confused at first but then I could see the ears of Shira moving in panic. Hear cat ears went from entrance to entrance while her fluffy tail whipped around in panic. “Run... RUN!” she screamed and pointed towards one entrance. “This way!” she said, still panicking. Everyone did as she said, and Shira then looked at me. “What is it?” I asked. “I don’t know, but it’s nothing good!” she explained and turned her head rapidly to look again. I looked around and everyone had already left the cave, everyone except us and another person. “Kamira, what are you still doing here?” I asked her confused. I didn’t get a response. Instead, she just sat down, closed her eyes and let her horns grow. I remembered. Yes, this was her ability. Kamira can control her horns in any wanted way. She let them grow into a gigantic net over her head. Then, they stopped for a second and suddenly, she punched them right into the ground around her. Like tentacles they whirled themselves through the ground and towards the entrance where the sounds were coming from. Then she opened her eyes and asked me: “Jake, can you help he out?” “If you tell me how…” I said confused. “This entrance of the cave got damaged in a way, that caused it to collapse, if we don’t close it, the whole cave will collapse, since it’s just earth, not stone around us. I need you to tell me, if the wall I will create with my horns, will be strong enough to stop this from happening!” She explained. I realized what to do. “Shit this is going to hurt you, and you know that!” I said. She nodded. I looked at the entrance. I could see how her horns started to create a net in front of it. “Sorry Kamika…” I whispered and started to run towards the net. I jumped and punched it on a certain spot, and I could hear Kamika scream in pain. But the horns did what we wanted them to do. They broke and the entire net became a net of spikes and hardened themselves. This is an ability of them. Whenever Kamika or her horns are hurt they will grow spikes and become harder to defend her. If the material which hits them is harder than the horns themselves, they will attack this material and copy its structure. I felt the spikes of her horns trying to break through my scales, but it didn’t work. They just managed to break some and after about a minute of them doing this, they gave up, but kept the broken parts of my scales. I could see how the spikes became grey all over the net of horns. Kamika suddenly screamed again. I wondered why and realized it the next second. The spikes where now harder than the horns material itself. They grew into each other and trough the horn itself, causing immense pain. It would feel like someone would push needles into your spine. While trying to defend themselves the horns grew more spikes, all with the strength of my scales. So, the net became a wild chaos of horns and scales. Then suddenly, the ground vibrated, and the horns stopped moving. Silence for a split second. Then there was a sound I will never forget in my life. The tunnel on the other side collapsed right on the created net. I could hear cracking and smell fresh and wet earth. Then, there was silence. Another sound cut through the air. It was the breaking of Kamika’s horns on her head. The net remained still. I saw Kamika collapsing in a prison of her own horns around her.
