Ironically, Tolkien didn't say he grew fat on eating dwarves, but from eating so many of the maidens of Dale. He said he got so fat that he could no longer fit in the secret tunnel that he used to get into Erebor! But Smaug did say to Bilbo something to the effect that no one knew the taste of dwarves better than him!
