Twilight Velvet was born to a long-standing Canterlot noble family that prided itself on being descended from Starswirl. Her father was head of the family, her mother brow beaten and subservient, and Velvet was expected to follow the same behavior.
Except she didn't. Velvet was active outside the house, writing and learning in school when her family wanted her to be learning how to be a good wife. This eventaully culminated in her father using his wealth and position as a high ranking member of the guard to pull her from school and keep her out.
This broke Velvet. She was sheltered, hidden, and abused verbally until she was fairly compliant. Even worse, her father betrothed her to her first cousin. There seemed to be no way out.
She managed to convince her father to let her have one last fling with the outside world before she was married off, and so attended college. There she met Night Light.
Night Light's family is a lower-upper class family that follows The Lunar Sect, basically a religion based on astrology and the phases of the moon. Night was further studying the cosmos, and learning how to build telescopes. He had entertained many fillies before, but no one felt right to him. And then he met Twilight Velvet.
The two fell fast and hard, having multiple quad dates in the middle of the night. Velvet was absolutely terrified of what her father would do, but Night was patient and gentle. He helped to assuage her fears, convinced her to follow her own heart rather than the orders of her father.
As soon as they graduated, the two eloped and Velvet cut off all contact with her family. She got a job not only as a social worker but as an editor for a famous author, and Night's papers became widely published. In addition, he became a certified Star Reader in the Sect, called out to births to bless the foals in Luna's name.
