I actually changed the ending, based on some input; the original ending was even more harsh.

Actually, yes. Happy endings. Nothing else will do. Ya coulda had him exchanged back to home, a meeting with one star, and back to his office. Perhaps to have Yeofur take an interest in him. Happy endings are possible, even in spy stories.

Yeofur Pine? Best case scenario I'm thinking is that she succumbed to injuries sustained in her suicide attempt. Worst case: she was disappeared. Worst case #2: she's manning an outpost similar to the abandoned one or heroes visited.

Well, eventually the war will be over, and eventually pows get released. How same he will be after possibly years of solitary confinement is an open question, but time heals all wounds.

Unanswered questions, though. How'd the Kashlani find them is obvious enough, they were buzzing around the border. But how'd they know what to look for and bring the ritual execution crew?

Walt46 pointed out that Ivar & Co. had broadcast in the clear; the communication was likely picked up. And one of the episodes (a flashback) in Walt's stories indicated the Ritual Crew was being sent out.
