I have the pixarpedia (huge book) and apparently john lasseter (owner of pixar) wanted to steer away from the generic furry animals so they went to things like cars, toys and robots. In addition, pixar designed topics for boys over girls like dysney did (eg cinderella, sleeping beuty. bambi etc) as where Pixar went boys stuff, bugs, cars, robots etc :)
