Really bad things can happen in the forest. You either hang on or fall apart, but if you're gonna burn, then burn it all.

Evan: "Look, this isn't exactly pleasant for me either."

Evan: "Do you know how hard it is for me to show physical affection to another person like this?"
Cleo: "SOMEONE! ANYONE! END MY SUFFERING AND RELEASE ME FROM THIS TORMENT!!!"
Evan: "Seriously, I don't usually do the whole "emotional vulnerability" thing..."

I imagine this started for Evan as a sort of "hug her tightly to show your concern for her and that it's gonna be okay" situation and ended up as a sort of "hold on for dear life because if you let go and/or she loses the impression that you care about her feelings then you're probably gonna get immediately disemboweled" situation
