Athmook | 'Mole' Alien | Sci-fi/Fantasy
★ Side-Project ★
It is my pleasure to present to all of you, the first part of a project that's been close to my heart for a while: Kaleida!
This animal is a spade-footed mukash, one of several hundred species of athmook. Athmook in general are small, insectivorous, burrow-dwelling species, broken down into several taxonomic Families - of which, mukash is one. Mukash are more prone to living permanently in their burrows than other Families, and the spade-foot has a special relationship with a completely different (as yet unnamed) species that leaves half of the burrow-digging and most of the vigilance for predators to this species.
Almost all athmook species have eyes in the backs of their heads - that's what the fronds on their skulls are for. Light-sensitive patches on the ends of these allow them to notice changes in light behind them, which helps them evade predators.
This is sci-fi/science fiction, not fantasy, but Furaffinity lacks a drop-down option for that.

Planned ret-cons: In time I'm going to adjust this species to be more colourful. They have calloused skin which I think will get infused with the local soil in which they dig. If they dig in limestone they'll become almost white; in coal-rich soil then black; in ultisol then orangey-red; in copper-rich soil then an icy blue-green.
What is Kaleida?
Kaleida is a worldbuilding project without a storyline or individual characters. Most of my clients come to me with stories and characters and treat worldbuilding as an after-thought, so I'm doing the opposite and focusing solely on my worldbuilding. This species is a result of my research on how to create an alien ecosystem, which I wrote as a blog series. Read it here.

Thanks! This is a species rather than a character, though. I went for a walk yesterday and thought about the kind of art of individual, neolithic characters I'd like - along with the culture I want to show these guys having. At some point I want them to adopt the idea of colouring themselves with the local minerals and soils and for that to have cultural significance. Perhaps for beauty, perhaps for something else. That would mean I could write them as having those colours all over.
I really should look into whatever materials are used to make the buildings in the Pink City.

Thanks very much! Cowmomile did a good job on this one, and I look forward to incorporating those ret-cons for sure!
