"Salote is a puzzle folded inside a conundrum tied up with three bewilderments and a query. Nobody knows who put up the standing stones, when, what for, or whose idea it was to put them in the middle of a mire. Epic are the rows over whether the stones were carved, melted or grown into shape. Melees have raged through the Halls of Deep Knowing over the correct cataloguing of the sigils on the minor monoliths of the second-inner ring. And sometimes, when a total eclipse of a blue moon coincides with a mass flight of pigs, someone will actually visit the place.

At a loose end after a frustrating series of adventures involving far too much noise and beetles, I decided a visit to quiet, beetle-impoverished Salote would be restful. I'd no expectations of making a breakthrough, but seeing a place is more fun than arguing about it."
