The time it takes to art
I wanted to take a moment and use the previous piece I just uploaded to show something with art. Something thats really really easy to forget.
People who see your work don't see the last 60% of effort to get it 15% better. A HUGE component of making commissioned works is knowing when to stop. I can see the issues at 2hr and I can spend another 2hr to get it "done." But I'd bet hard cash that most people would hardly think I'd spent that long, if they even saw a major difference at all. Some people would be totally happy with the 40m piece. Others would think that 1hr 20m is done. I spent more time then that just to "touch up" and it took another 50% of time... To me, it was well worth it. But what if that extra 50% time turned out to be 3 more hours? That can easily happen as we artists tend to strive for perfection.
The hot tip for any artists that see this and are looking to live off your art; take a chance to look at your art at different qualities. Notice when you're spending a lot of time on minor details. Are those details key? Does it harm the piece to not have them? Is there something else that might need your attention? Spend that extra time and effort on the pieces you plan use for examples. Prove you're able to do those things. But not every piece needs it.
You're not lying to your commissioners by stopping at only 70% what you're capable of. Nor at 50%. Your time is valuable and that has to be accounted for!

Its a bit of lore on that whole species! I designed it for her specifically but I ended up shortly afterwords designing them as an open species haha
Its a thing that took me way too long to learn. And honestly still struggling with feelings of perfectionism. Its all learning. But at least this is one lesson you have a head start on!

For sure, this advice is really geared towards the digital and traditional media side of it rather then all forms of art. One out of place note or area can drag down a whole song. While one misplaced line will, at worst, be slightly annoying. Its a good exercise in allocating your time wisely but its not as firm of a rule with that.
As for the art, the last 5 minutes were minor details in the background, some very small highlighting things, but mostly her top was redesigned on the front. I caught myself really really focusing in on details and that's when I cut it off, hence why I have only a 5m difference on the last two! Spending 5 minutes on details that you yourself didn't catch wasn't super worth my time now was it?

To me, its passable and postable at the 2hr mark. I could go another hour easily. But thats where I really drew the line, when I noticed that I only *could* go farther not I *should* if that makes sense haha. Also I use the extra time to make more art because self-employed business in art, gotta keep em coming for the most part. Only when the queue is done or its the end of the day do I really take the time to chill!
