Most conservatives vote Republican, but most Republican officials are far from conservative.

The sheep and the Gadson snake represent the two different, competing, and openly healthily debating factions of the political right wing: Libertarians (anti-authoritarians who usually still have some firm moral grounding; they want to be conservative with the amount of power given to the government) and traditionalists (who see moral purity, especially in public, as highly important and desirable; as such they want to conserve the good traditions of their culture and prevent moral decay).
