This might be slightly lore breaking for Manokits so if anyone has a problem with that, oh well I'm just having fun.
Ulmo was born from a sea shell on a small island in the middle of the Pacific ocean. The island is hidden by the magic of it's Chieftain so that no humans discover it. Once a year a magical storm sweeps through the island and leaves various treasures from the human world on the shoreline. Many of these treasures are taken by the Manokits of the island and incorporated into their society. Treasures like books, silverware, odd pieces of jewelry and even on rare occasions humans who could only leave the island if they drank a magic potion that would make them forget all about the island and it's inhabitants. One year after eight storms had passed since his birth Ulmo found a book called The Silmarillion by J.R.R Tolkien. Through his own magic Ulmo was able to read the book and understand it though he could not speak the language. In it he found the name of a minor character who was called "Ulmo The Lord of Waters", he took the name for himself and begin to take the title that came with it as a challenge to lean all he can about the ocean. He could never be able to swim but he could make observations from the shore, shallows and many tidel pools around the island. The many books that had washed up on the island over the years had been collected into a kind of public library which Ulmo used to begin his studies. He leaned about oceanography, how to read and make nautical maps and how to build small boats which he used on clear days to help him study the marine life in the corals surrounding the island. The other Manokits believed him to be crazy or stupid for risking drowning to study something that to them was dangerous and unnecessary to learn but Ulmo didn't care, he fell in love with the sea and wanted to know all of its secrets that he possibly could. By the time he was 26 Ulmo mastered sailing, knew the many species of marine life that lived around the island and had leaned from one human who never left the island how to make a functioning life jacket for Manokits (although no other Manokit would use it no matter how good it worked). The human was a French man who had been thrown overboard off a cruise ship by his wife's secret lover. His name was Louis De Lorraine and although Louis and Ulmo could not speak to each other Louis found that these strange creatures could understand written language. So Louis and Ulmo communicated through notes on paper or by writing in the sand on the beach and they became good friends.
This is pretty much everything I have on Ulmo the Manokit. He's ment to be a reflection on my own interest of the sea which was an interest I had very strongly as a child that I have only recently began getting back into.
