So funny story about shiny Ponyta; when Silver and Gold came out I had no idea about shiny pokemon, so when I came across a blue Ponyta in the game I was like "Oh neat, they have different colored pokemon in the area of the map. I'll have to come back later and catch one." And then proceeded to knock it out because I was trying to get to the next town.

It wasn't until a few hours later when I had returned to the area and was looking for the blue Ponyta, that I realized that they were actually rare. 😭

I guess I have a similar First Encounter with shinies...
I went to an event at the Pokemon Center in NYC YEARS and years ago, where you could put your Pokemon Crystal cartridge in a machine and it gave you an egg. I didn't know what shinies were at the time, so I was quite upset that all I got was a Ledyba.

Looking back, I'm pretty sure the event was for random shinies...so it wasn't "just a Ledyba" after all...

But like everyone else's now, my Crystal's battery was drained by its own internal clock, so...no more Ledyba, anyway. 😭
