Aaah but how? Because this is the thing that links Duke and Stan, and it is only through good fortune that Stan was taught otherwise.
The world is a cold place, especially if you are more weasel than bunny. You are stuck at the bottom. Maybe you can work and managers and bosses will treat you terribly because they know they are better than you. You DON'T want to work for people who think you are trash? Well then the street is probably very warm this time of year, go live in it. Maybe you can find someone to love, but always the world is harsh, you can lose a job, a place to live, it is hard to love when the world can just tear you apart. It makes for broken families and sad endings. We see this with Stan; when he has Rabbit and Kessie; he does not know how a family is supposed to work, how you take care of someone. He has never had that.
You grow up in the cold and so often alone. And you learn many things. You learn family will not be there for you, love is not waiting for you, you should not be nice because nobody will be nice back.
But there is something that can fix this: Money. It will make people respect you, and treat you well, it will make them say they love you. It can bring your family back. It can buy you fun, safety, even happiness. You see people who have it have everything and do everything that you do not have and cannot do. That is the final lesson to learn, that only money will satisfy you.
Stan was lucky, he was given a way out. He did not -could not- do this himself. An accident happened and he met Rabbit, who is that rarest of things that makes diamonds look like coal -someone who cares- and together they made everythingmoney hunny could buy and more.
But this is not supposed to happen, it is not how the world works, which is why it is so special. Why every day Stan has now is incredible and at the end of even the worst ones he can slip into bed with his bunny and go to sleep with a smile on his face. It is why Stan would agree (But would never admit!) that Rabbit is a dream come true. He is the sort of thing that people wish for. When people fall into sleep cold and hungry and alone they dream of such a miracle.
Stan is living the dream. Duke can look, he can touch, but he can never have. He knows the only path for him is money, you can steal it, you can't steal love. That is the lesson he knows and nobody can teach him different.

Light is more valuable in darkness. It is something I am sure Stan keeps in mind, he appreciates Rabbit much more than most people would because he knows a life without them. Of course he will never admit this, but he can think back on the cold and dark times and know how much he has gained, how much better things are. He can see people like Duke and know that was him once, see and feel how much more warm and bright his life is now. That is the joy of it, as sad as the loneliness is, it is nothing compared to the love he has now, every day.
That is life, some people live a miracle. And some people exist just to remind everyone how bad things could be.
