My interpretation of Alice in wonderland as a 1960's gritty film noir about an old out of work detective following a lead that might help him find a little girl caught up in a topsy-turvy world of drugs and death.
(top) The Grinning Bastard: a con artist of such slyness and cat like grace that he can be anywhere he pleases, including breaking into and out of prison just for practice. Because of his slippery ability and cunning he proves to be a valued informant of the aged detective and is his only help in this new world of crime and criminals. Orginally referenced from Steve Buschemi
(Middle) The Loon: The addicted nut job bar-tending at the Loony Saloon. His drug habit is fueled by a drug ring that bought his establishment while he was in rehab. His only insentive to keep quiet is the free supply that he hides under his absurdly inappropriate hats. He tries to also sneak his ingestion of these mind altering substances in the drinks he has on his shelves. Unable to tell which was which at times he can be caught switching around prople's drinks or drinking them before they even reach the customer. Original reference Garey Busey and Nick Noltey.
(bottom) Alex: a man who had been a great and famous ace detective back in the 1920's. But due to an incident during the new post war America he had suddenly dropped out of the game unable to handle a case. He drinks heavily and is prone to fits of depression for his inability to perform like the detective he once was. He must dive back into new era of crime and depravity to solve the case of a missing girl before it's too late.
