Rosie and the Little Fox
A preview of something I've been working on!!
My grandmother wrote all sorts of children's stories for me when I was a baby. We found an old cassette tape of my favorite story, where a little girl and her grandpa go on a walk after a big rain storm and help a lost baby fox find his home.
I have always wanted to adapt her story and illustrate it so that it could be read to my children, and to surprise her since she always loved my doodles. She has given her blessing when I asked permission years ago, and attempt after attempt failed since I couldn't figure out how I wanted to draw it and the publishing process frustrated me...but pressure has built this year with COVID and her losing most of her eyesight. My grandfather also has dementia and is drifting away, so it is a great time to buckle down and finish it. Husband stepped up and helped with the text adaptation, and my friend who recently published her own kid's book gave me pointers for self-publishing.
I know it won't be good enough to actually sell well or anything, but I have an account set up so I'll even be able to sell it on Amazon for $15 so I can get multiple copies. May even see if I can sell them at cat rescue adoption events for a little more so that they could be a fundraiser? Only problem is, I will make approximately........... $1/book if I charge $15 ahaha. The process itself will cost less than $150 since I am doing all the legwork on illustrating and editing myself, but since I'm making it a big 8.5x11 size with premium color pages and a glossy hardcover print (so that it will feel "real" to my grandma and she has at least a chance of being able to read it), printing itself will be hella expensive.
It will really just be a passion project, but if this goes well, I will use what I learn to create others that may be a little more solid since they won't have hard deadlines like this one.
Full color and 24ish pages. I just gotta get the pages done. Husband and I have already adapted the story and adjusted it so it is a little more storybook-friendly, and this was my attempt at designing Rosie, her grandpa, and the little fox. This will be turned into the cover of the book, though I have a lot of tweaking to do.
So.... keep your eyes peeled if you are interested! I will put links to buy it. And if not, you'll still get to see a page or two :)
