From what I see, I think it has to do with the scruffier cheek and chin fur, the longer tuft of hair coming from the hat opening, the overall darker fur color, and the facial expression (especially in the eyes).

And as to the progress of your artistic skill? I'll let my +fave speak for me, hehe.
