i have had alot of people in the past either ask me how to draw raptors, or when will i make another tutorial. so here is a tutorial on raptors. grrrr. i hope its understandable and stuff.
This will prolly be edited a few times, i plan to add a new section every now and then. i am open for critique from those who perhaps have had even more experience with dromaeosaurids.
i am always available for redlining.
EDIT LIST:
6/24/10
-added in the halluxes to avoid confusion
-edited a minor wing feather error pointed out by

:O This is really interesting to me. I don't know all that much about dinosaurs, but the little bit I do know is really fascinating.
Anyway, I'm really impressed with your tutorial! I guess it didn't strike me how much people don't care about being accurate with their dinosaurs.

I'm a bit confused on the wording about the feet and the pictures. You say there should be four digits, and that the other three are normal sized compared to the huge-ass claw toe. But in the pictures there's only three digits, and you say there should only be two digits next to the claw toe. Which is it, three or four? What am I missing here...?
Very nice tutorial! My one minor critique rests on the hands - all known dromaeosaur imprints show the feathers attaching to the second digit, not the third as you've shown.
It also should be pointed out that the sickle claw toe actually does have three other toes next to it - but the third is the tiny hallux, which is on the inside of the foot and doesn't touch the ground.

Whoop, sorry, I see that you mention that in the text, but it might be a little clearly if you show that toe in the drawing of the foot also, since many people either forget it entirely or they put it on backwards (dromaeosaurs did NOT have reversed halluxes like birds do).
thanks! i do plan to edit in the 4th toe that i mentioned but didnt draw in, the next time i update this tut (i should have noted that in the comments). as for where the feathers on the arms begin, could you link me a ref perhaps? so i can visualize it and edit that as well. thanks again i appreciate it.
Sure thing, glad to help.
One of the best references for where the feathers attach is done by Kyoht: http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/.....rence/arms.jpg
Here are some other good ones:
http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/.....ae_vs_bird.jpg (The top one is a bird, the bottom Archaeopteryx, but the feathers attach in exactly the same manner in dromaeosaurs as in Archaeopteryx)
And here's a silly one I made: http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/.....rome_hands.jpg

Sadly since JurassicPark i like that wrong all fictional Raptor-Version...(except the tail-and the foot mistakes. they are just...ugly)
But i think people should KNOW that they are NOT real and that there never were such monsters on planet earth.
So i really like your tutorial c: Thanks for sharing!

I just put a link to this into my standard reference form, I hope you don't mind.

Lovely reference! I have an alien raptor character, and have tried to balance out realistic raptor anatomy with JP anatomy, since most artists are uncomfortable with realism. Also squid parts and people hands, but aliens.... :P
I will definitely refer to your guide when I draw "real" raptors though! I have been meaning to try my hand at paleo-art.
