Greg ran down the corridor, struggling to see in the darkness, his blood pounding in his ears and his gasps of panic echoing around the walls. He had no idea where he was going, but he couldn’t bring himself to stop. He just wanted to get away, to find somewhere safe.
The floor cracked and Greg dug his heels in just in time to avoid falling in a deep hole. He stumbled back, reaching out to support himself on the wall, but his hand found nothing. He fell back, through the hole in the wall and tumbled down the slanted floor until it level out. Wincing, he pushed himself up and looked around.
At first he thought he was in space, the dark expanse in front of him dotted with stars. When he pulled his gaze back, he realised it wasn’t quite what he thought. It was space, but only a picture on the wall, painted on with little light shining through holes. There where large spheres, planets, hanging from metal poles in a mobile effect, surrounding this giant, broken orb with a dead light bulb inside. Saturn had fallen and was half in the floor, its rings broken too. There was another hole in the floor, but he couldn’t tell which planet was missing.
As he was marvelling at his surreal surroundings, a voice called out, making him jump and his heart stop.
“Help!” it said.
Greg looked around frantically, hearing something creaking and the cry for help bouncing off the walls. Had that been his own voice? The echo of his cry bouncing around this building only to return to him, to mock him. But it hadn’t sounded like, hi, the voice was too deep, almost throaty.
“Up here!” it said again, this time a bit frustrated.
Greg looked up at the red planet of Mars, only the red planet had white arms and legs sticking out of it, as well as a familiar looking face.
“Red?” Greg stammered, looking at the
the-Fat-Red-Dragon hanging over head. “Is that you?”
“Yeah” he wheezed, relieved that Greg had seen him now. Although Greg had gotten used to seeing people at different sizes, he couldn’t help but stare at the dragon’s larger belly. He definitely looked bigger than his normal size, like he’d inflated himself. “Could you help me down?”
“Erm… OK. Yeah, I… I’ll think of something”
Before Greg could even move there was an ominous snap, and Red’s eyes bulged wide. They both looked at each, Greg suddenly realising that he was right under Red and if he was to fall, then he’d be pinned under that large belly. There was another snap, much louder this time, and like a stone in water, Red plummeted to the ground.
And landed right on top of Greg.
Luckily, Red wasn’t heavy or hard with muscle, he was soft and squishy, like he really had just inflated himself. He was heavy enough to push Greg down though, and unfortunately, the floor was not soft.
Greg’s head hit it with a dull clunk and stars flashed in front of his eyes. At first he thought Red had missed him and he was just staring at the stars on the walls, but he could feel Red’s belly smooshing his nose and pinning him to the floor.
Red rolled off quickly thankfully, looking down at Greg with an embarrassed expression as the fox peeled himself off the floor, rubbing his head to try and keep the stars away from his vision.
“Sorry” said Red.
“S’OK” said Greg, his speech a bit slurred.
He looked up and realised he’d misjudged Red’s size. He was actually bigger than he’d first thought, about 7 feet high and… well, very wide and round. Red often had trouble fitting through doors with that belly of his, but now it looked almost impossible for him.
“Do you know where we are?” asked Red, looking down at Greg from his greater height.
“No, I was hoping you did”
“Well, when I came too, I was hanging where you found me. I don’t even know how I wound up like that. I remembered the portal opening and getting sucked in, but I don’t know why I ended up hanging from the ceiling. Have you seen anyone else?”
“No. You’re the first person I’ve seen. Maybe the others are here and we just have to find them”
“Sounds like a plan”
