Everyone's doing those character development memes, but I wanted something a bit more in-depth. So here's Midi over the years I've had him. The boxes marked with a gold S are the ones I did from scratch. Unfortunately, I remembered that a long while back there was a sheet of him I did from scratch, also the very first one I ever made of him, but it died with my old desktop. Anyway, here's some info on each one.
Sonic Advance style. I always drew Midi with clothes, but his first sprites were naked. Here I tried making clothes for him too. Notice his shirt used to be orange too. His pants still were folded at the bottom. Also his tail wasn't on the same sprite as his body. It was attached behind and would rotate as he moved.
Klonoa Advance style. The later editions of this style were really pillow shaded because I was still just learning. I actually liked the pillow shading, but a lot of "better" spriters said they were poor quality because of it. Made me mad. It's my art, so I can shade it how I want to, right? Anywho, I made the tail the same sprite as the body this time.
Megaman 8 style. I was learning to use fewer shades per color, but still didn't do that great on these. Abandoned them for a long time and was considering going backwards to the second one. Went back to the attached tail, this time programming it differently so it would rotate more smoothly. Called it the "smart tail".
Zelda Minish Cap style. Made these for a Bomberman fan game that never got off the ground. The head came from Pachirisu.
Scratch 3D. Never got past the standing sprites. I found these very ugly.
Megaman 8 style with outline. Added his beret here. Since I was still mirroring sprites then, his beret would flip to the other side of his head when he turned around. This is the only sprite I made that did that. The rest I always made two sides for. Also practiced dithering on the tail.
Summon Night Sordcraft Story style with outline. Didn't get far with these either. Just did them to practice RPG style with. May bring them back though. They had promise.
Tales of the World style. My favorite for quite a while, especially since I could fit so much detail into him here. Later found out I didn't like how small his eyes were here, but they didn't work when I made them bigger. Still, I like this sprite a lot.
Disgaea style. A nice 8-directional sprite. Really liked how these turned out. May finish them later on, if I ever make an MTS RPG.
Mario & Luigi Super Star Saga style. Really liked these. Was gonna use them in my second attempt at a Bomberman fangame along with Link, Wario, Waluigi, a custom Bomberman I did a while back, and whatever other characters I could think of that used bombs. Did tons of frames for this, and made a full playable sheet. I'm thinking of modifying them into my own shading style later.
Scratch style. Using Minish Cap style outline shading, the head and tail I made for the ToW sprites, and totally new body parts, I created a standing and walking set for Midi that I was very pleased with. But it was too bulky and too complicated to do much with. Still a very good learning experience.
Megaman/Rockman 8 style. Reshaded and updated, this one worked out way better than my previous attempts at MM8 style. Totally love these.
Scratch NES style. Using the NES color palette, I made these 16x24 sprites. Tiny and cute, I'd like to use them in something if I could only figure out a good use for them.
Final Fantasy DoS style. Just for fun. No intent to use.
Scratch Experiment 1 style. I reeeely wanted to make an original style that was still close to my MM8 sprites. This came out. Very cute.
Pokemon Ranger style. WIP, still working on this one. I made Midi older, giving him a new jacket too.
Scratch Experiment 2: Gave him the new jacket and tried a new shading style. Looks nice, but the black outlines made some parts of him look blended together. Wasn't happy with it.
MM8 Teenager style. The older Midi in MM8 style.
Scratch Experiment 3: Increased his tail size to better fit his height, and made the feet look less flat. Also picked a new color palette to make his fur look richer.
MM8 style recolor. Just updating his palette.
Scratch Experiment 4: Took measurements from a Megaman sprite I found and used them to make a brand new scratch sprite. The styles are very similar, but I'm proud to say I drew this all with just the pencil tool, and it looks nice. Also, the size allows him to fit in with Megaman Wily Wars and X SNES styles, so I'm really happy with that. Hopefully this style will go far. Used both colored and black outlines.
