Don't know. They are constantly at the side of the road eating grass. They're roughly the size of a bulldog.

I was going to suggest a muskrat initially - I wasn't sure because they aren't that large but these two other suggestions almost look exactly like muskrats!

well im sorry, its just that they dig giant fucking holes everywhere in my yard. but instead of blowing them up like in caddy shack, i'm getting some ultrasonic speakers to drive them away. they don't die and my yard lives.

I was being sarcastic! But I'm actually impressed of your method of getting rid of them! The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation held a contest for a couple years for people to kill them by themselves - returning tails for prizes. Really sick, makes my stomach churn.

why would they kill gophers? kill cows, at least you get tasty beef.... mmmmmmm

I don't know why preventative methods aren't always implemented instead of eradicating them! One is significantly less work than the other :C

no kidding, these speakers also have stopped the damned prairie dogs and other digging rascals. good thing i know people, these speakers cost quite a bit before the discount.

the warthogs occasionally destroy property however, the speakers do nothing. they are quite dangerous which prompted my neighbors to pick up some shotgun shells. i might do the same.

Its actually a ground squirrel, I mentioned in the post its actually a flickertail.
That's kind of like saying all crows carry disease, or all raccoons have rabies.

Well obviously it's not a blanket statement. It's just extremely common around here for them to carry the bubonic plague which sucks because they're really friendly and will actually let you pet them and they'll eat from your hand.

I'm really surprised, they must be acclimatized different or even an entire separate species, the ones here will scatter once they hear footsteps.

Well the biggest population of them in this direct area is on the side of an elementary school, i'm pretty sure the kids constantly feed them as they're the fattest fucks i've ever seen. I think they just trust people, it's a huge colony and supposedly almost all of the ones in this area are plague carriers. This is good, the world can use less kids XD

Ahhhh I love ground ground squirrels/gophers. I agree that theyre absolutely amazing to watch (almost as fun at meerkats haha)

In general I get that feeling around pet stores, but what even gets me more is when these little ground squirrels are getting trapped while I'm there :(
The city technically owns the piece of land they're on, but its an overflow parking lot (not paved, just grass and dirt) in a business park between acres and acres of just.. land. They aren't getting into anything, they aren't destroying any crops, and they set out (inhumane) traps for them :(

I'm kind of wearing my heart on my sleeve here, and this will be as embarrassing as it is relevant, but.. I had such a moment when they were mid-way through setting up the traps (I had been sitting in my car the whole time, before they arrived) and was watching one of them approach a set trap... I was so torn between getting out of my car and shooing it away from the trap, or exposing the fact I'm a bleeding heart and a problem to the cities potential pest removal :C
I cried! It was SO SAD.. I am SO lucky he didn't actually get into the trap or I'd have been done for!

.. I did set off the traps after they left, though. FYI, I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I left with them ready :( I'm really lucky they didn't have surveillance LOL

It's just totally not worth the risk for me to even pass that judgment - a life is a life!

I can't do it myself, tbh. I'll set a bug free rather than kill it - mostly to avoid a mess but because I don't think its my place anyways.

I'd like to think of the world we live in as a mirror - if we were in a situation where just say, we were invading a bears territory, I'd be REALLY FUCKING GRATEFUL if I was somehow spared if I couldn't save myself.
So, I just like to see it in myself to be that one that spares them. Even if they can't realize it, or see it, I'd rather play that role in life than the alternative.

I'm just crazy tho, shit nobody cares about anyways blah blah blah :P

I've heard that squirrels stretch out in the shade like that. Animals are much more playful and "human like" than we give them credit for. and it's awesome when you catch it in action X3
