So I worked out this system to convert an arbitrary image into a chainmail pattern. And I got a pile of anodized aluminum rings in a size that makes a really dense weave. I had been working on an image of Fender for a while in a different size of ring, but I wanted something small and really colorful that I could show to friends without having to come out as a furry and all.
So I started working on a fish at first, but that pattern ran me out of dark purple.
So I made a different pattern. One with a good mix of all the colors.
It's an eye! If it doesn't make any sense, look at it from across the room.
To get the base image I brutally cropped
's icon because it's really pretty. I maybe should have asked permission first, but I was doing this mostly for myself as a test so I didn't really worry about it. If there's a problem with it I'll deal with the problem.
Anyway. Anodized aluminum (16ga 3/16" ID), 6.5 x 5 inches, 40 x 30 pixels. This one is not for sale, but I'm considering working out a pricing for these because I think they're really cool.

... It's a Da Vinci portrait made of nails. I'm not sure if this link will work. Your comment reminded me of it though.

Let's see... say a life-sized portrait...
60 inches tall by 24 inches wide times 6 rings/inch = 400 x 150 rings = 60,000 rings
60,000 rings at about 180 rings/hour = 330 hours, or about eight and a half weeks at 40 hours / week.
Sure, it might break a record, but I have a feeling it might not be a record I want to be breaking.
