GenSet switcher #700, National Railway Equipment's prototype for all following GenSet ultra-low-emissions locomotive models sits at CN/IC's Markham Yard, outside CN's diesel shops and load-test facility. The unit was built on the frame of an EMD SW1200, as can be seen in the frame and trucks-- that's 1940s design recycled for 21st century railroading!

The horsepower is variable, due to the design of a genset loco- it has three separate engine blocks of (I think) 300 HP each, and computerized control automatically shuts off one or two of the sets of engines when the extra power is not needed (saving fuel and reducing emissions). If all three are on at once, I think it's somewhere close to 1000 HP, not sure. NRE's larger gensets are up to 2100 HP, I *think*.
