Gume Gume was the Monster of the week in Ep.43 of UFO Robot Grendizer, and was the personal craft and beast of Commander Gasca, Minister Zuril's assistant and Principle antagonist for the Episode. It had a wheel shape Saucer design, with Bars across the hull: often, the head is seen exposed, though it will hide when doing it spinning wheel attack. At the center of the bottom of the hull, which is the principle weapon. Spikes ran the length of the hull in vehicle form.
Its Robot form, the Saurcer Shell becomes the main body, blue in color; Its arms had flails for hands, and were black and purple, with green shoulder plates; The legs were purple with blue knee joints and black feet; its head was purple, possessing three spikes on top and one eye in the face. Gume possess a laser canon in the chest which fired a ray that blinded the enemy, as well it use its flails for direct attacks, as well missiles, and could extend its arms to hit an enemy with it flail hands.
After the fail attack on the Space Center, Zuril finds little to no weakness in the new design, but discovers that the previous volcanic activity has created an island that would be useful for an Earth station base, Zuril decides to send his assistant, Commander Gasca to build a new base, with Gandal promising a high ranking position once the planet becomes a dominion of the Vega Empire, and the Commander embraces the job with zeal. Later, the Space Center detects an incoming meteor approaching the atmosphere (Gasca and his team on board Gume Gume), Koji takes off to investigate, and while approaching the object, he is hit by a orange beam that knocks him, though he recovers and flies back almost blind, avoiding getting out of the atmosphere; as for the meteor, it crashes in the waters off the volcano island. Koji returns but badly effected by the encounter.
Sometime later, a patrol ship sailing the area of the meteor crash is destroy by one of Gume's weapons; Gasca orders a soldier to guard to arrest the pilot of Gume, having given observation orders, not attacking; by now, his work force is well underway with the construction of the new base. The news of the lose of the Patrol ship reaches the Space Center and Team Grendizer takes off to investigate; their arrival puts the Vega force on edge but Gasca orders them continue the work under the threat of death – commander boards Gume Gume for the incoming fight, firing guided missile at them, which Duke disposes off with Spinning Saucers.
Duke orders Koji to explore the island while he and Marine Spazer combine to deal with the underwater enemy, receiving many incoming missiles, taking cover but then been surprise by the Saucer Beast's Blinding Beam, Grendizer falling into an underwater trench. Meanwhile Koji making a few passes over the area notices a single sea gull (a Vega watch probe) and follows it, diving into a lake; realizing this been the enemy base, he then bombards the site, destroying everything and killing much of the Personal. When Gasca is inform, thinking only his own future prospects (Gandal's promises of promotion) he re-emerges to stop the escaping vessels, shutting everyone one of them down (per his Death Threat order from before). He later returns to the site of the base, to find another Guard, though this dies (body disappears, actually, but same), and begs the other surviving soldiers to help him finish the base, by this his irrationality taking hold of his mind, later killing them as they attempted to flee, then firing like a mad man, spouting he was beyond error.
Grendizer re-emerges (Duke still partly blind) and Gasca, now mad, decided to fight the Robot by himself in one on one; Gume punches Grendizer, knocking it down, then it transforms to ram him as a rolling wheel of death with a few passes. The fight comes to an end when Gume transforms and Duke sees the sun's reflection on the beast's head; Duke acts fast as Gume extends its arms and Grendizer moves out of the way, these falling into the canyon below, Gume is dragged by the momentum itself and falls into the crevasse below, Gasca activates the laser by accident hitting the canyon wall on the way down; both pilot and Saucer Beast are destroy in the process. Grendizer and the rest of the Team flies back home.
Side Note and review: Episode is a dud. Very rushed when been written. There were ideas of team work which go nowhere (in fact, so poorly constructed I decided NOT to add it in the summary at all).
Gasca was such an uninteresting villain, and it saddens me, but when he is introduced, he had such remarkable funky hair due. But his only defining character was his ego been boasted by hopes of greater promotion if he completed his mission to the point of (reasonably first and then unreasonably later) punishing subordinates and in the end he is literally killed off by the troupe of "stepping over the Big Red Button", cause probably the staff just did not knew how to write off this one and they actually decided "Fuck it!! Ze Big Button is!", and to top it all off, for some reason Duke gave him respects in the end, barely having ONE word with the guy.
So sadly, despite possessing the Funkiest Hair due in the Vega Army, Gasca tragically has to be put in the box of Disappointing/Uninteresting Pilots – Hell, he even make me not dislike Haruko and Zegra that much as before.
