That is kind of the point. She lives in a world where spirits and shapeshifters like her (she's a kitsune) mostly pass as human, but she still has to worry about things like mirror reflections showing her true form. So the trenchcoat helps obscure any occasional glimpses people get, and she uses the fact that she works as a private detective to explain it as an affectation.
None of that helps against people with the Sight, of course, but those are relatively few.
