Do you have a backstory regarding what happened to his ears?

Eeeh, kind of. It's not anything especially epic, though.
When he was a kid, his ears were kind of oversized compared to his head and he had the habit of tugging and pulling and even sucking on them if he could get them into his mouth. This continued, as bad habits often do, and escalated into sometimes scratching or clawing at them, sort of like birds who overgroom and pull out their of feathers or someone who has trichotillomania (which I always have to google because I cannot remember how to spell).
Despite his mom telling him to "stop that!" he managed to scar and leave them kind of ragged. He's better about it now, but the edges still tend to lack fur because he still rubs at them. He atleast can't get them into his mouth anymore.
On a TMI kind of note, he also likes and encourages sexual partners to play with and even bite his ears.
This is the sort of character information I keep in my head, but would never bother to say unless someone asked.

Haha, that's a really good story! I like the fact that it feels realistic, rather than some of these furry backstories you read, like "Oh, he got these scars fighting a 10,000 ft Kraken when he was in macro mode" or something xD

For what its worth, the world that my characters populated is much like this one and completely devoid of any supernatural whatnot and things like micro macro hyper taurs inflation and vore don't exist outside OD the imagination. Crazy unlikely fur colours abound though.
