Or at least, that's the day I set to be his birthday. I'm still debating whether or not my characters' introductory date is when their birthday should be. I get to make things more confusing until then.
It's hard to believe that it's been around ten years since I made art of, apparently, the most popular character I have. Most like his design and personality, last I recall. But I've really had the desire to make new art of my old characters. However, I'd like to start by giving them a new reference, and while I did sketch something up for Spot, I ended up using Doughshi's art yet again to make this. So this is new art and not new art at the same time. I'm not entirely proud of doing that, but I figured it would be the easiest way to do a reference. Maybe I should make a base for it...
Spot Colors is a native to Aunov, born February 18, 1998, making him 23 years old (at the time of this upload). He is born to his mother Dottie, a one-tone white Yoshi, and father Leonardo, a dual-tone black Yoshi. Dottie is known for her works of art, particularly in painting, while Leonardo is very much into photography; it was very easy for Spot to make paintings of his own growing up.
Speaking of, Spot and family lived next door to the O'Doyle's after they had settled down with Kye. While their parents' backgrounds have noticeable differences, that didn't get in the way of Spot and his friendship with Kye, even at a young age, the two clicked so quickly, Spot following Kye around like a little brother neither had.
However, due to the O'Doyle's situation with Dr. Y during Kye's very early years, they had decided to move with very little warning to Yoshi's Island for their son's safety. Spot was distraught to know that one of his only friends was going to be leaving, so in a bid to make him happy, Dottie and Leonardo moved as well, that way their friendship could continue throughout their childhood. This was also the case for their move to the human world and, while delayed, back to Aunov.
Eventually, Spot and his family would be brought in to move to the Silver Tower so that they could stay together. Ever since, Spot has remained committed to assisting Kye in anything he sets out for. He desires to one day be as strong and independent as him.
Spot is extremely carefree, upbeat, and happy. He is absolutely bursting with glee anytime you come across him and he is very likely to hug you if you're friends with him. He enjoys having a conversation with someone and checking up on you, as well as becoming concerned if things aren't, even if it's not extremely concerning.
On the other hand, Spot can be a tad clumsy or childish, and although he is in adulthood, he still very much enjoys playing with toys, and finds more enjoyment in ones that he can be creative with, one of his strong points. This comes from his parents and their hobbies with painting and photography, and Spot is also a budding artist who prefers painting over other forms of art.
Spot is a one-tone snowy-white Yoshi with eight circular spots located across his body, from as far up as his head to as far low as his lower tummy, and as far right as his shoulder. They are red, orange, yellow, green, sky blue, indigo, purple, and magenta. Originally, Spot would wear a cerulean pair of Yoshi boots but has opted recently to go barefoot; the only article of clothing he now wears is a necklace bearing the Emblem of the Aunov Royal Family.
While very little is known about Spot being born with multiple colors across his body, it's usually been called a birth defect and a puzzling issue as to why a white and black Yoshi would result to this. However, the answer may link to Ioa's magical makeup, and each of those spots include a small bit of magical power dependent on the color.
⚠️ The following two paragraphs are taken from Kye's Version 7 update from August 21, 2020 and edited.
Much like his other friends, Spot is a Softie, known on Ioa as a being that has a body with malleable properties. Softies do not have bones in their bodies or internal organs, but the body as a whole substitutes these actions for its changed makeup. Softies have bodies that mimic malleable materials, like dough or clay, and creates a scent that somehow matches their personality.
For example, when Spot takes a hit, it will likely slow him down, he might recoil from it, but the worst that will happen is getting a dent on his body that will puff back to shape in a little while; there's no pain from it, but just the feeling that comes from it. Or, if Spot is crushed by something heavy like a Thwomp, he is merely crushed and flattened down into himself! No pain, no life lost, but this does present new dangers that Softies deal with, such as the likelihood of becoming stuck or trapped in a form or somewhere. In this case, yes, Spot is not hurt and is merely squashed, but without someone to help him spring back to shape, he is perpetually trapped and leaves him open to be squashed again, or for someone to take him with little resistance. This also means that Softies can be very stretchy and flexible, which gives Spot ease at moving around and maneuvering.
Finally, Spot wields a magical paintbrush that seems to interact with his colorful spots. By just imagining something, he can use its magic paint to create things by stroking the ground or area around him. He can also use it to teleport through a nearby work of art as long as the paint he falls through is the same majority color of the art he's coming from. One example is using purple paint to turn things invisible including him.
Spot has less of a story to tell than most of my other characters but this is also in an effort to write for him better and to, in short, bring him back from obscurity. I feel like now that my writing has improved, I can take the time to figure out what works better now and what doesn't. Plus, Spot still remained one of my personal favorite character designs from when I started doing art, so of course I couldn't get rid of him!
Consider this a fresh start for him, and I'll be doing my best to get to at least one more in the near future. Thanks for looking and reading! 😃
