Characters from my story called "The Martian Roads"

(In the distant past, when there was not even a hint of life on Earth.)
Mars is an arid place with almost no water or other resources. A place teeming with evil monsters and other dangers. Still, there is intelligent life here, but there is no civilized society. Looking at the ancient ruins, you wonder if this has always been the case? What happened to the planet and are there roads that can lead the inhabitants of Mars to a brighter future?
