Chapter 71: Max’s Surprise Part 1
It has been five weeks since the friends’ little skirmish. After freeing Jenny and Sophie from their mind-control, they returned to Jenny’s home to find a large gaping hole where her door should have been and a very livid Amy.
For Jenny, her punishment was extended to three more weeks and she was going to have to pay for the damages out of her allowance. The same went for Sophie, who was also denied going on shopping sprees. We now find Max back in his room, calling Mikey on his phone. “So, how are you and the boys faring?” he asked.
“Eh, well...” Mikey replied. “We’re all doing fine.” “A bit of a rough day for all of us, I mean we just saved the girls from being mindless robots.” He added. “It’s been one adventure after another.” “Well, I for one,” Max explained. “will be glad to have a normal day, with no killer robots, no brainwashed girls and no Mc.Hannibal’s schemes.”
“Wishful thinking, Max.” Mikey remarked. “So, what you planning to do today?” Max shrugged. “Well, there’re no patients today, so I decided to stay at home for the day.” “Anyway, how are Jenny and Sophie?” He asked. “I haven’t heard from them.” Mikey told them. “Maybe there’re still grounded.”
Max sighed. “It’s such a shame,” he pointed out. “It’s just not the same without them.” *DING! * Max’s eyes widened slightly when a message popped up on his phone. “Oh, speak of the devil,” he added. “I got a message from her.” “Well, that’s a relief.” Mikey replied. “Well, I’m should get going; my dad and I are going for a jog in the park.”
“Okay, see ya.” Max spoke, before Mikey hang up and looked at his message. He was pleased that Jenny was alright. He grew surprised when he read the message.
“Hey Max, I want to apologize for what me and Sophie almost did. You and the others risked your lives trying to save us, even after we almost killed you.” It read. “Well, you’ll be happy to know that Sophie and I managed to work things out and our punishment is over.” “But, there’s still something we need you to know; would you mind if we came to your tree fort tonight?”
Max was a little confused but shrugged and typed in a reply. “Sure, when can you come?” he asked. “We’ll message you, just come as soon as possible.” Jenny replied. “We’ll be waiting for you.” Max smiled and replied. “Sure, Jenny; looking forward to whatever it is.”
After turning off his phone, Max went to the window and stared out into the sky. He wondered what Jenny and Sophie had planned for him tonight. “Well, if I’m going to wait, I might as well go for a little forest walk.”
Max leapt of his balcony and landed gracefully like a cat. Soon, he made his way to the forest.
(2 hours later...)
Max walked quietly in the forest. The sky was turning a beautiful mixture of gold, orange and red from the sunset. The songs of birds were occasionally heard, and the gentle breeze of the wind made his hair flow. Max closed his eyes and smelled the fresh scent of pine trees.
So much has happened to him over the past months since he moved to America from Africa. Instantly, he thought about his parents; who remained behind in Africa to continue their research, but they always wrote back to him or talked to him in video chat.
His mind travels back to his jungle home; all the memories came rushing back.
(Eight years ago...)
A troop of mountain gorillas were busy grazing peacefully. The she-apes were busy grooming one another or cradling their babies. The younger apes were romping around, play-fighting and tussling playfully. What was strange was among the baby apes was a little human toddler about 2 years old, playing with them and wearing a small loincloth around his waist.
That little boy was no other than Max Yamato. During his time in jungle, he made friends with many of the animals in the Congo jungle. However, he was especially close to the gorillas. This troop was being researched by his parents and the WWF crew. As a result, they were Max’s regular companions; almost like a second family.
“Ooh Ooh Aah!!” A baby gorilla with a bushy head of fur jumped onto Max and the two tussled and wrestled about. Max squealed with delight; it was Terkina or Terk for short. She was the closest friend any boy living in the jungle could have.
Another young ape tackled him, slightly more muscular and a small scar near its left eye. It was Akut, Max’s “adoptive” brother. They were practically inseparable, having been around since Max was a baby.
The three friends tussled about, rolling along the ground, squealing and hooting loudly. Eventually, Max was able to wiggle free and grabbed Terk from behind, wrapping his arms under her shoulders and grabbing the back of her head.
Then, he tickled her neck, causing her to screech louder than ever. After two minutes of tickling, Max released his hold on Terk and they collapsed to the ground, panting and sweating all over. Akut rambled close to them and patted Max on the chest, hooting with excitement.
Max grinned and hugged his ape brother tightly. He hooted back and thumped his chest with his palms. “Ooh, ooh!” A female gorilla approached them and Akut instantly rushed forward along with Max. The she-ape picked up Akut and placed him on her shoulders. She smiled at Max and lovingly stroked his head.
Max hugged the she-ape, who was called Kala as she hugged him back. She was Akut’s mother, and in a way, Max’s ‘godmother’. She had become closely attached to Max ever since he was a baby and took it upon herself to be his caretaker.
Max’s parents were worried, fearing that the gorillas would harm him but the local tribesmen assured him that he was in safe hands with the apes. Sure enough, they were right; Max became somewhat a member of the troop.
Kala lovingly cared and raised him as if he was one of her own and Akut treated him with kindness and respect. Even her mate, Kerchak, the great silverback and leader of the gorilla troop was like a second father to him.
At that moment, a large silverback with a broad chest and large muscular arms approached them. Immediately, Max bowed low to him while Kala gently moved aside. Kerchak grunted softly and placed his large hairy hand on Max’s back. Max smiled as he felt the silverback stroke his back gently.
To him, Kerchak was the shining example of a good father. Despite his large and intimidating appearance, he had the kindest and gentlest disposition any gorilla has. Kerchak made another grunting sound and pointed at two human photographers at a distance. Max grinned and waved at them, who waved back.
Max hugged Kala goodbye and raced off towards them. “Mama, Papa!” He cried, as his parents smiled widely, enveloping him in a tight hug. “I see you’ve been having fun with Kala and her baby.” Sarah, Max’s mother replied, she was a brunette lady wearing a blue jacket and black jeans.
Hiro Yamato, Max’s father, a Japanese American with a small mustache and wearing a green jacket with beige jeans, grinned inwardly. “Well, dinner’s getting ready.” He added. “You better head back and get dressed.” “Sure, daddy!” Max replied, before racing off. As they watched, Sarah looked at her husband with concern. “I still don’t feel good, leaving Max with the gorillas.” she explained. “All animals can be unpredictable, who knows what will happen to him.”
Hiro placed a hand on his wife’s shoulder. “I know,” he replied gently. “but the witch-doctor assured that he will be fine, that he will be safe with the wild creatures.” “I mean, you saw how well the gorillas accepted him, there’re practically treating him as one of their own.” He added. “Besides, the reason why Max is getting along so well with them, must have something to do with what happened a few nights ago.”
Sarah bowed her head. The memory of that fateful night repeated back in her mind. She remembered finding her son lying in the middle of the jungle unconscious, scaring her out of her mind. Fortunately, the witch-doctor told them that he was fine, but there was something different with him, something had changed him.
She sighed. “I just hope you’re right, honey.” She replied. “I just can’t bear the thought of anything bad happening to him.”
Max smiled to himself. The night when he found the Animus totem had changed his life forever. He still missed his life in the jungle, but he had many new adventures here now in Boston. Nevertheless, he wondered what Jenny and Sophie had in mind that he wanted.
Picking up the pace, Max hurried over to his tree fort.
