The founders of Furry fandom - Gallacci, Wyman, Sakai, etc were all my age - born in the late fifties and early 60's. we grew up with the first wave of Anime - Kimba, Wonder 3, Astro Boy, etc - with Marvel's silver age up into the underground comix of R.Crumb, etc - and back in those ancient times there was no "furry" as such - it was just a sub-genre of SF. i started drawing in earnest at around four years old (rilly) so by the time "furry" emerged as a separate fandom i had already been doing "furry" art for a couple decades. (which was transformed a bit by doing a Fine Arts major/Philosophy minor and then decades in the animation biz) ....
Very nice! I found the fandom in 1995, grazed it in 1992 without realizing what it was at the time. Have seen and read some Omaha the cat dancer comics back when they called them Funny Animals but that's about as far back as Ive gone or had much exposure to as far as folks who were in it back then and before experienced.
The first furry meetings were around '85 "it has its roots in the early-to-mid-1980s, when a group of sci-fi con attendees who bonded over anthropomorphic animals organized room parties devoted to their mutual interest before splintering off to form their own event." - Rolling Stone Magazine.
The old influences (sorry for spelling mistakes - so many names...):

The list from modern fantasy artists is so long that i’m not sure where to start – i’ll prolly make a journal on them at some point. And then there is modern non-representational art, etc etc.

Oh my! I did not expect such a long list. If you don't mind, I'd love to take a look at these artists. For the ones I recognize, they are really good choices. You can never go wrong with Miyazaki. Mucha also has great design and composition choices too!
If you do decide to create your journal, I would be happy to read it. Thank you for taking the time to respond.
