“Thank you for joining me, Mr. Rice.” The slender man stood up from his seat. “It’s time for your little field trip.” Dr. Zwo took me by the hand and led me through the facility to the loading dock.
A temporary tunnel shielded us from the cold night air and any onlookers that might spot us. “The security team will take you to the sister facility.” Dr. Zwo let go of my paw and returned inside.
Ahead of me sat the open doors to the truck. As I grabbed the handle to pull myself in, I felt unseen hands shove me inside. I fell forward onto the cold floor of the truck. I crawled forward into the space as the dual doors slammed behind me.
I was left in the dark. Someone slapped the side of the truck before the engine turned over, starting my journey. My eyes adjusted to the dark, letting my improved night vision reveal what hid inside the dark interior.
I was alone in the truck. Two rows of seats were anchored to the floor. I grabbed the armrest of one and pulled myself to my feet. As we started moving, The truck lurched forward and sent me stumbling into the heavy doors. After regaining my balance, I decided to sit in the middle and try to enjoy the lonely ride.
It felt like I was sitting in an army truck that had been reused for Intramorph. I don’t know how long we had been on the road, but I was about to doze off when something clicked in my brain. Suddenly I was aware of something behind me.
I jolted alert and looked around the space. There wasn’t anything else in here that could have touched me. A shiver ran up my spine as a cold feeling spread from a foreign part of my body.
Pain erupted from my lower back. My nervous system finished connecting to my new appendage in a rapid series of electrifying jolts. New muscles spasmed and jerked, throwing me to the floor.
I squeezed my eyes shut, curling into a ball as sensory overload flooded my brain with new and foreign information. My breathing grew quick and labored, the muscles in my face contorting into a pained snarl. A high pitched whine squeezed past my lips before they opened into a violent scream of agony. The volume hurt my ears. I curled tighter, cupping my hands over my ears as tears streamed down my face. Agonized screams fell between a steady rhythm of sobs. “Help!” I cried out, “Someone? PLEASE!” My voice felt raw and sore, “Please. Someone help me.”
The constant screaming made it harder to breathe until I eventually passed out from the exhaustion and pain. My unconscious mind was not free of the pain, however. Like the dreamless sleep from before, I was aware of the changes that were actively at work in my body. My tail stretched farther, rubbing against the cold, metal floor. As if on instinct, it curled around my unconscious body until the tip was mere inches from my snout.
My heavy breathing came out in snorts. I could smell it. I could smell me. I could feel my hot breath on my tail. I wanted so badly to reach out and hug my log of a tail like a child clutching their favorite stuffed animal, but I still couldn’t move not voluntarily at least. I felt trapped in my own body, acutely aware of its sensations, but unable to see or move it. I couldn’t get up from my position on the floor, even as the pain subsided, leaving a dull ache in its place.
We didn’t stop. No one came to check on me. The security team just continued the quiet ride. Left alone in the silence, my mind finally got to rest as I drifted into sleep.
At some point, we arrived at the facility. My mind woke up before my body, continuing to leave me trapped. I heard the truck stop and three men opened up the truck, dragging my body out with gruff, calloused hands. My body started to wake up slowly, muscles twitching to life in a silent symphony of information. My ears were among the first parts of me to wake up, swiveling and turning toward each voice as they spoke.
“He’s a big one, eh?”
“No shit! He’s certainly big boned!”
“Come on you two, drag it out here and throw it into the observation wing.”
“Come on Andy, you know these are people.”
“NO.” A brief pause, “No they aren’t. Not since they threw away their humanity.”
“What the hell, boss? You can’t just write off these people as things…Ugh! He’s heavy! Brandon? A hand?”
“Sure.”
“They ARE things. They aren’t HUMAN anymore.” Venom dripped from Andy’s voice like a leaky faucet. “They’re Intramorph’s little PETS. They don’t have RIGHTS anymore. They don’t DESERVE those rights anymore. It’s you two who’s wrong here.”
The other two didn’t respond, leaving a heavy silence between the three of them as they dragged me inside and through the halls. My tail dragged against the pavement and tile behind me.
Eventually I was thrown into the sister facility’s sanitation lock; the loud noise combined with the spray did well to wake up the rest of my body. I jerked as I gasped. My eyes shot open, and I scrambled to my feet.
I stood up to get my bearings. The room was poorly lit, burnt-out bulbs and poorly installed ones reducing my way to see clearly. Like the Homestead, there were three doors to the room each with a glowing red panel, aside from the one that led into the Great Hall.
I padded over to the door and cracked it open. They were so much lighter than they seemed at Homestead, but that’s probably just because I’ve grown so much bigger and stronger, even since leaving Homestead earlier in the evening.
I stepped into the sister facility’s Great Hall. The lights were turned off due to the late hour. Only a few stray bulbs illuminated the perimeter and doorways.
A voice echoed in the room. “Welcome to Traveler’s Village.” I couldn’t place the location of the sound as it bounced off of the walls. I sniffed the air. Someone was in here. It smelled marshy and wet, but also light and feminine.
I spotted the flash of a tail duck behind one of the couches. “Who’s there?” I asked. My voice wavered. Fear and adrenaline still flooded my system, keeping me on edge and my hackles raised. My demeanor would’ve looked imposing if I wasn’t pulling back, tail drooping between my legs.
A laugh echoed through the room, “Hahahahaahaha!” The flashes of movement were getting closer, the trail of scent showing behind a couch. I ducked beside a nearby couch as my heart pounded. My eyes finally adjusted to the dark, allowing me to see beyond the couch. A pair of eyes crept closer, like they were gliding on a track. The orbs reflected the warm light, piercing and sharp as they stared right through me.
Suddenly, they lurched forward. I was tackled by something, or should I say someone? I fell backwards, rolling onto my side to prevent my spines from digging into my already sore back.
The figure stepped off me and held out a clawed hand. I took it; the figure lifted me up and glided over to a panel. It tapped on a few things before the lights came flooding back into the room.
I squinted my eyes and blinked as I tried to focus on the figure. My pupils dilated, switching between a vertically slit form and the round ones I was used to. I blinked, realizing that the figure was a female crocodile person!
She was tall, with a tail that touched the floor with a foot or so of extra contact. She had thick limbs and a strong build. She didn’t look fat in any sense of the word. She looked sturdy and strong.
She smiled and waved at me as she came back. “Sorry about that! I thought it would be a fun prank to pull!” She laughed again as I cracked a smile. “It’s so rare to see a man here!” She smiled. “Come on! We’re going to be working on your tail in the gym!”
I nodded and followed her. We remained on the first floor as we passed into pool area. I changed out of my robe, finding a pair of large swim trunks set neatly on a bench in the extremely small men’s changing room. I put them on and walked out to the pool.
The crocodile woman was already out there in a one-piece suit. She smiled and waved at me. “Come here!” I smiled and trotted over to her. “I think I forgot to introduce myself!” She giggled, “I’m Lila! I’ve been here about a year or so now, and I’m looking forward to seeing those new beast-folk towns! Just imagine a town built just for us, like these facilities!” She held out her hand. “And you are?”
I blinked a moment and grabbed her hand to shake it. “I’m Ryker!” I felt my tail trying to wag. It wiggled, but only managed to sway from side to side slightly. The tip however, thumped against the pool tile with wet slaps. The pain had subsided, but the sensation was alien. “I’ve been here for a few hours and just a couple days at Homestead!”
Her brows furrowed. “Homestead?”
I nodded, “Yeah, Homestead is the name of our facility.” I cracked a small smile. My tail thumped faster.
She nodded, “Ah, so it’s like how we’ve named our place Traveler’s Village!”
“That’s such a fun name! It feels so much more creative than Homestead. It’s kind of a sausage party there.” I groaned, flashing back to the fraternities of campus and cringing.
She laughed, “Hahahahaahaha! Yeah, I get it. There are only women at this facility.”
“That explains the whole SISTER facility thing then!” I laughed.
She smiled back, “And you our BROTHER facility!” We laughed for a bit before recomposing ourselves.
“Okay, okay! We should actually get started with the whole physical therapy thing!” She kicked a mat over to me. I caught it with my paw as she rolled another out onto the floor and laid on her stomach. I unfurled mine and took the same position. “So,” she started, “crocodilian tails are large, heavy, and slow.” She slowly lifted her tail from the ground. “Repeat the motions I do.” I nodded as I focused on moving my tail in time with hers. “Our tails are extremely powerful and strong and durable. They can help us swim quickly through the water and even propel our entire bodies out of the water, almost like a dolphin!”
Lila walked me through the movements and natural mannerisms crocodile people have had so far. After 45 minutes or so of exercises, we got ready to try swimming with it.
“This is the MOST fun part about having a crocodile tail.” Her voice became almost a whisper. “I wish the pool was bigger so we could have the space to swim straight up and stuff… but we can always hope for a fun field trip to a lake or something right?” I nodded. She smiled. “Okay, I’m going to jump into the water. Have you tried swimming since your changes started?” I shook my head. “That’s alright, dip into the pool and grab the ledge until you get used to how your body feels in the water because that tail is a major extra weight if you don’t use it properly.”
She walked me through how to swim with my crocodile tail, shaking it with in tight, wave-like motions. The tight motion rocketed her through the water to the other side of the pool. While my tail was smaller and covered in fur, the powerful muscles of my tail were enough to propel me quickly through the water. I even got to doggie paddle a little bit as a joke. Swimming like that was much more difficult when my tail wasn’t being used as the primary method of propulsion in the water.
After a while of swimming and laughing, we got out of the water. I shook the excess water from my fur like a dog, standing on all fours. My ears flapped wildly. My tail struggled to shake off the water, but I could tell that practice could wick the water off just as well as the rest of me. Lila laughed at my canine mannerisms light heartedly.
“I assume I should be thanking you for the swim trunks?” I asked as we made our way towards the changing rooms. She nodded.
“Yeah, I wanted to make sure you had a way to cover up! But even then, your fur can do a great job to cover up your stuff!”
I chuckled as I held out my hand to her. “Thanks for training me tonight. I hope we get to see each other again soon!” She nodded.
“Oh! Let’s get each other in our contacts on our VitaWatches!” She held out her watch with the face toward me. I matched it with my own. After a moment they chimed with the new information. “Alright, now we can message and communicate with each other! I’ll be sure to check in every now and then to see your progress with your tail.” She pulled me into a quick hug which I returned. “See you around crocodile!”
I laughed, “Later not alligator!” She giggled as we entered into the changing rooms. I dried off at the drying chamber and pulled on my robe over my now dry swim trunks.
When I got out of the room, Lila had already headed off to bed, since it was nearly one in the morning. I walked out to the sanitation lock and found three men sitting in the waiting room on the other side.
“Hi!” I waved. Two of them waved, while the third shot daggers at me. They must be the three guys I heard earlier. “Time to head off?”
They nodded as they grabbed my arms and led me back to the truck. This time I jumped inside and took my seat. I heard the doors slam as we made our way back towards the Homestead. The gentle rocking and exhaustion from the day quickly sent me to sleep.
