i work in a photo studio, and we do painting reproductions. basically, we take hi-res photographs on painting, and my job is to optimize them on Photoshop for them to be the closest to the real thing (amongst other things i don't get to do cool shit like that often byt moving ooonn) and then use this hugeass printer to reproduce them on canvas. when we do this however, we get a lot of scraps from the roll, and they usually go to the trash, as there is nothing to do with them; so with my boss's permission, i get tpo chop them into nice little sheets and keep them. i have been printing on the backside, which is basically thick fabric canvas, and coating them with a protective spray. :)
