Not a dumb question at all!
I usually just use reference of the overall item (in this case an axe) and try to go from there.
This way I can make my designs very unique, without looking too much at specific reference or designs from other people.
Of cause that's not always possible. If someone wants a futuristic AK for example, I have to work with an AK reference of cause.
