Chapter 7: Stalker Caught
The watcher didn’t have much trouble following Atasi back to the main campus. Busses aren’t exactly
fast, and are large enough to not notice someone laying on the roof. The watcher was laying on her
stomach and used her wings to keep her sucked to the roof and just waited till they got to the exit she
knew that Atasi would use. She didn’t like to leave behind what felt like a problem that needed her
attention, but she also didn’t see a way in right away and given that her little stalkee was inside she
could maybe learn something from Atasi’s papers. It might mean more ‘hands on’ surveillance, but she
didn’t know how long she had before the problem got worse.
Inside the bus Atasi was reconsidering her life choices. Attaching a freaking HEAD onto a corpse?! She
knew her boss’s nickname was ‘Victoria Frankenstein’, but this was more extreme that she had thought.
She shuddered remembering what it felt like to have to hold the head in place as Victoria and some
doctors that Atasi didn’t know did the wiring up. She had tried her best to ignore the less than pleasant
noises she was hearing as long as she could. Then the ‘thing’ started moving she almost lost it and had
to swallow some vomit. It hadn’t gotten up or anything, but the rest of the corpse jerked and twisted
along with readouts appearing on a screen that the head had in place of a face. As soon as Victoria had
finished what they were doing Atasi spent an hour in the bathroom.
Atasi almost missed her stop and padded back towards her room trying not to think about things too
much, she could not shake the feeling that she was being followed the entire way though that wasn’t
too surprising given how she was feeling right now.
The watcher padded behind Atasi till she got to her building then flew around to her window before she
could get up. The window being locked was hardly a barrier as her multitool melted through the crack
and shifted the lock out of place and let her in.
Once she was inside a loud alarm went off sending the watcher into a bit of a panic. Fur on end she
rushed around the room trying to figure out the cause. The cause was easy enough to determine, a
small sensor attached to the window was chirping out an electrical signal not fully dissimilar to a
mocking shout of ‘I got you’ and apparently went off when the window was opened. The speaker
making the noise was also easy to locate, and she could have turned it off by simply yanking the chords
but that would be a dead giveaway that she had been there. Instead, she closed the window to satisfy
the sensor then found a small control box between it and the speaker and got to work calming it.
I need you to relax please
Normally she used her abilities to cause controlled failures of components, breaking things in a way that
would be noticed and fixed, rather than leaving them to break more catastrophically later, but she could
do other things too. The city and its machines spoke to her, told her of their pains and the causes, and
while her normal methods of bringing mortal attention to the problem probably wouldn’t’ work here,
she might be able to simply ask the little PLC to do her a favor.
I can’t be noticed, please go back to your other state
The willed her abilities inside to small box containing a microchip that was eagerly announcing its
purpose and, rather than burning the wires inside, she caressed them, imprinted on them, gave them
just enough of herself for a brief moment that they really could listen and then obey.
There we go, thank you.
The alarm had turned off in the nick of time as Atasi was getting off the elevator and approaching the
door. The watcher pressed into a corner as she entered. She had intended to watch Atasi. Particularly
where she put any papers or computers she was carrying from work, so she could read them. What she
wasn’t expecting was Atasi to freeze a few steps into the room and glance nervously around at the
computer and then directly at the corner the watcher was in.
Atasi’s mind was racing. For awhile it was mostly the words, “Oh my god” on rapid repeat but started to
settle down over a course of a minute or two that she stood in place. What the watcher had failed to
notice but that Atasi definitely had, was the multitude of mini sonar sensors she had placed around her
dorm room. Each one had a tiny LED, barely bright enough to see, and the ones that the watcher’s body
was obstructing were lit up. It wasn’t the same as seeing her, but it meant that Atasi was pretty sure
that someone, or thing, was in the corner.
Atasi stepped back and plastered herself against the closed entrance door as she fiddled with her laptop
too get it open. The watcher stared back unmoving, she was sure Atasi had to be reacting to her,
somehow, but she was also sure that Atasi couldn’t possibly see her. She was right of course but the
network had seen her, and the laptop reported its findings.
Atasi saw a basic 3D representation of her dorm displayed on her laptop screen, and in the corner of the
virtual room a black blob was staying there, Still completely invisible to any visual inspection and the
sensors that were working produced an image only good enough to know that something was there, as
to WHAT was there it was little more than a dark blob in the corner.
All in one moment Atasi knew it was all real. The stalker than had been following her. Watching her in
her classes, watching her with her friends and in her dorm, even watching her when she showered! It
was all real and her mind was having more than a little bit of a hard time even comprehending this,
especially after the workday she had just had she was desperately trying not to faint, and also trying not
to look as terrified as she surely looked as she stared at the nothing in the corner.
The watcher had a similar problem. She had bumped into mortals before but had always being able to
scoot away leaving them unsure that they had even felt her at all. In this case though she was trapped.
She couldn’t very well turn and go out the window again, Atasi was staring straight at her and would
surely see any attempt to go out the window. Additionally, Atasi herself was blocking the door herself
preventing her from leaving that way either. Sure she could force her way out but that would hardly fix
the issue of being detected.
It was actually Atasi that recovered first, not entirely of course but enough to speak, “W-what are you?”
Her quivering lips barely formed the shaky words, but the watcher heard them just fine.
The watcher was caught in indecision. Should she respond? Run even if she needed to use force? Or talk
back? She was considering the third option when she make a startling realization. She did not actually
know how to talk!
Sure the watcher could understand multiple languages, both spoken and written, but she hadn’t in all
her centuries, ever actually spoken, at least that she could remember. While her body didn’t have the
same needs as a mortal in terms of food and water she felt like she still had the necessary structures
that she SHOULD be able to produce speech, but simply did not have the practice to do it.
In a moment of panic the watcher defaulted to the ‘RUN’ option and spun around to work the window
back open. Atasi saw the LED’s on the carious sensors trip as the watcher moved and they both heard
the alarm that restarted when the window opened.
In a moment when the noise hit her, it shocked Atasi out of being scared. Then she got mad. This
THING! This thing had been stalking her for weeks, watching her even in her most intimate moments
alone and now that it was caught it was trying to run?
“Oh HELL no!” Atasi shouted and with uncharacteristic bravery rushed forward to tackle the intruder
before she could escape.
The watcher found her face slammed against the not yet opened window. Her head bonked against the
glass when the weight of the snow leopard charging her connected then fell back when Atasi pulled.
Atasi was frantic. This thing was physical, furry like a person, and warm to the touch. She had expected
semi incorporeal if anything and cold, like the movies about ghosts, but this felt like a living person, just
a fully invisible one. the feathers she also felt smacking her in the face confused her, but she’d have to
worry about that later. She clawed and grabbed randomly trying to hold onto the impossible intruder
while the intruder thrashed to get her off. She could hardly tell what or where she was grabbing as she
couldn’t see anything at all only feel, but she had it, she had caught it! she had it! She would get some
answers at last!
“AAAAHHH” She arched as an electric pulse rocked through her body. It seemed to originate from the
invisible person she had grappled, like its whole body had been a conductor and battery for the
lightning. She spasmed on the floor twitching her muscles going limp. The last thing she heard before
passing out on the floor was the sound of her dorm door being thrown open, and the last thing she saw
was deep gouge marks in the side of the power strip under her desk.
