This has got me thinking, would the ballista be effective in space warfare? The tips can always be replaced with a shell, there would be no drop in the bolt as long as combat is out of a planet's gravitational pull. No propellant would be needed either. The only problem I could see is the large bulky size of the ballista itself. They could be most effectively lined up and fired in a large spray, similar to flechettes would fall during their use in WWI.
