In this one-shot you follow a Pronghorn deer called Oscar, as he has one of the weirdest days in his life, perhaps.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was pitch black outside. Oscar opened an eye. He looked for his alarm clock, which was stationed on his night stand. Having found it after grabbing in the empty space of his room for about a minute, he got the thing. He looked at the time. 5:30am. Why was he awake already? His alarm would ring at 8am. Grunting, cursing himself for waking up so much earlier than his alarm, he got up. Making sure his horns didn’t get tangled in his pillow case, he rubbed his eyes. The pronghorn boy gave his limbs a good stretch before getting dressed, washing his face and trotting downstairs.
He moved to the kitchen, ready to prepare his breakfast. He opened the fridge, and took out an apple, an orange, two tomatoes, a box of grapes, two kiwis and a peach. Grabbing a knife and cutting board, he then went ahead and methodically started cutting up all the different sorts of fruit, throwing the pieces in a bowl and mixing them into a fruit salad. Whilst he was enjoying his salad, he tried to remember which day it was, but couldn’t come with an answer.
After he finished his salad, he went to pack his bag for school. Still not knowing what day it was though, he didn’t know which subject to pack either… Highly problematic, Oscar thought. Guess I’ll check my… phone. Where’s my phone gone? He thought to himself. He was so sure that he had it on him when he moved downstairs. He decided to check every place he had been within the past twenty minutes. His room, the bathroom, the kitchen, even the built-in shed. His phone was nowhere to be found.
Oh well, he thought while shrugging it off. I’ve gone days without my phone multiple times. Guess I’ll ask mom and dad. Walking up the stairs, he felt like it took longer than usual to reach the second floor. Opening the door to his parents’ bedroom, he notices that their beds are empty, and he scratches his head in complete confusion. Had they already left for work or something? Starting to become slightly panicky, Oscar went downstairs again.
He had no way of finding out what day it was, as they didn’t keep any paper calendars. Everything went through their phones and laptops, but since Oscar didn’t have a laptop of his own, and his parents’ laptops being password-secured, he was pretty screwed.
He decided to just guess on Thursday, on which he had maths, science, PE, English and social studies. Packing his bags with the books, he started thinking of all events that had occurred so far. He had woken up two and a half hours prior to his alarm, he couldn’t remember what day it was, his parents were nowhere to be found, and neither was his phone.
Looking at the clock in the living room, he nearly got a heart attack. 5:30am still?! The clock must have been broken, or the battery needed replacement, he figured. Replacing the battery, the clock still didn’t work. Okay, so the clock must be broken, he concluded. Moving upstairs to his alarm clock, he figured that the digital clock would give him the current time. To his horror, it also still stated 5:30am! And he knew the alarm wasn’t broken. If he pressed a certain button, the display would light up, and it still did that! What in the world was going on?!
Oscar started to panic even more, his mind being all over the place, not knowing what was happening, or why. Heading downstairs yet again, he took the key to the front door, stuck the key in the keyhole and turned it clockwise. He heard the lock open, and he immediately opened the door, to check on the outside world.
It was still pitch black. It was so dark, that Oscar couldn’t even see his hand until he held it about 6 inches from his face. Now in full panic mode, the boy quickly closed the door, and started thinking about what was happening. Was he dreaming, perhaps? He pinched his arm. Ow! That hurt! Pain is a good indicator that he wasn’t sleeping, right? He had to be awake, this couldn’t be a dream.
Then everything went by so fast, that Oscar couldn’t keep up. The pitch-black sky turned into a soft orange, caused by a quickly rising sun. He heard footsteps coming down the stairs, but they weren’t normal footsteps. It was as if someone was running down the stairs! He quickly glanced up, to see who was rushing towards him. It was his dad! But he wasn’t running… It looked like… he was… being sped up? Wait a minute! How in the… When Oscar checked earlier, his bed was empty! Where did he come from?! He tried talking to his dad, but was promptly ignored, rather, it seemed as if his dad didn’t even notice him!
Not much later the same kind footsteps could be heard, only slightly faster. Oscar glanced up again, to see his mom coming down the stairs this time. And she also looked like she was being sped up! Again, he tried to talk to his mom, just like he had tried with his dad. Only to get the same result. He got ignored, or he just didn’t get noticed.
Moving into the living room, Oscar saw his parents go through with the usual things they did every day. Working from behind their laptops, attending meetings and everything. The only difference was, time looked like it passed by at thrice the speed. And it only kept going faster to Oscar’s feeling. He just stood still in the middle of the living room, looking at his parents, as they kept moving quicker and quicker.
At this point, Oscar had fully given up trying to make sense out of everything. Beaten, he dropped down onto the couch, and closed his eyes in the hope that today would be over soon.
Opening his eyes again, he saw that the same pitch-black darkness had returned. What really struck him though, was the fact that he was back in bed. He started looking for his alarm clock again, and lit up the small display. 7:13am. Phew, at least time started moving again, Oscar thought. While he got up, he saw his phone laying on his desk. The exact spot where he had left it two nights ago... Right? He decided to check his parents’ bedroom. To his relief, they were both in their beds, sound asleep.
Then he did something he might regret later on. He woke them up. Quickly apologizing, he explained what he had been through yesterday. Getting puzzled looks from his parents, he realized that it had all been a dream all along. So, pain was not an indicator of being awake or not, he thought… Good to know. It’s been a weird day, Oscar thinks, and goes about his day as he normally would.
