Avos and his mother share a special moment.

“That’s it, Avos. That’s the egg.”

Wide-eyed, the young dragon explored the lump in Mother’s belly. “Where’s it gonna come out?” he asked.

Smiling, she guided his hand.

“Not s’posed to touch people there.”
“You’re right, but it’s okay this once.”

Avos thought about his next question. “Am I gonna lay eggs, Mama?”

“No!” she chortled. “You’re a drake. Drakes don’t lay eggs!”

After a moment’s pause he said, “Tell me about the Two again.” This was his favorite story.
Mother drew him in under her wing. “Long ago, the sky was empty, the worlds bare of all life.”

Avos shivered.

“And then the Two mated, and in her time the Mother laid a great egg. And from that Egg all dragons are born, including you and me. We’re all hatchlings of the Two.”

Sleepily Avos said, “I want to see them, Mama. I want to visit the Two.”

She kissed his snout tenderly. “I believe you will, Son. Good night.”

“’Night, Mama.”
