There's a self-awareness to the sense of humor, sometimes bordering on self-satire. Character growth tends to be the order of the day with shonen manga and anime, especially these days -- and it'd be right in keeping with a satirical sense of humor to take that phrase exceedingly literally. (I wouldn't say it's the best at that kind of tongue-in-cheek satire, but it's still pretty good at it when the jokes land.)
Long story short, they drop most if not all the previous nen system. Which imho was a mistake, it's a interesting system. Give each character on the ship out to the rest of the world 'nen beasts' which are thinly disguised 'stands'. They're non humanoid but work the same way. No one who doesn't have a nen beast can harm a nen beast. The nen beast's abilities seem completely op, until the limitations are learned. like jojo's bizarre adventure. Then they throw a murder mystery on top of it.
