I think they’ve essentially ended up following with the “realistic” idea as well as what would work for their moral of the episode. But honestly, I have a feeling they didn’t think Baloo was good enough of a role model. Which shouldn’t have been the entire point of the character.
They wanted to make the moral to be about to “stop trying to be what you are not” (how Dewey wanted to constantly prove himself instead of actually using his talents), and had Kit as a foil (trying to be a pilot like his parental figure). But the moral instead became “stop trying to do something you were passionate about over what you’re better at” which was...confusing. And also a sign that they forgot that Kit WANTED to be a pilot before he met Baloo and KNEW a lot about planes (it was made clear in the pilot episode, after all).
And it’s not as if they couldn’t fix it to make it better.
Kit could still be a decent pilot. He’s just a bit too stubborn and sentimental over “Higher for Hire” and Seaduck, instead of letting go and joining Molly. It could easily still be tied with Dewey’s character development, about letting go what you feel you want to do (in his case, being noticed and cool for Dewey; trying to run a one-man business and maintenance for Kit) and accepting your limits while developing what you are good at.
This plot could’ve still worked. But they chose to make “Kit too much worship Baloo”, which I don’t think they understood their character well.
