Nothing lasts forever, this was something that Gadget had long since learned. She had long since moved on to live on her own and to work on her inventions once again. Years ago the old Ranger Team had finally parted ways with Chip and Dale going off to work with the Rescue Aid Society and Monty and Zipper returning to their travels. It was a peaceful though sad separation though with the realization that they all had dreams that they wanted to follow. And so it was that Gadget herself occasionally keeping in touch with her old friends would continue to push her research and creations to the next level of technology. She had even made a few patents and did free lance coding! (under a fake human alias of course!) But then one day she would receive word from Zipper that the unthinkable had happened. Monterey Jack had passed.
Gadget would be softened by the fact that it had been by natural causes, it had simply been Monty's time as it were. But it was at his funeral where she was reunited with her old friends Chip and Dale that was she was in for the shock of her life. They too were old and gray and much to their own confusion saw that Gadget was still as young as they had last seen her! At first they mistook her for Gadget's granddaughter with her having to answer a few questions only she could know that confirmed she was indeed their Gadget. Dale who by this point in time was far more wiser than he had been in his youth suggested that there was so much more to Gadget than she must have realized. Her high IQ alone had always been an indication she was no normal mouse but to still be as young and vibrant with no signs of aging suggested that her story had to have one or two chapters that she wasn't aware of.
A little later Chip and Dale passed on leaving Gadget alone once more. (But not without setting up a small memorial to her friends! Having saved Monty's goggles, Chip's hat and Dales Hawaiian shirt!) She would look into as much of her past as she could from time to time learning that there was a small lab facility named NIMH that was near the airfield where she and her father had lived. She'd learn that they had experimented on mice and rats but that was it. There was no mention of what kind of experiments and tests that they conducted. And sadly the facility itself had long since been closed with all traces of what it was they had worked on now gone. There didn't seem to be anything more she could do but return to her own inventions. That is until one night her anti salesman security alarm went off!
There dangling on a rope was a mouse of all things!
"Um Excuse me! Could you please see your way into letting me down?"
"You're not a salesman are you?"
"What?! No!"
"Okay!" she said with a bright smile as with but the simple pull of a lever down he came down with a loud thud!
"....Thank you..." a weak and dazed Gideon said.
After the pair introduced themselves the pair would get to talking as Gideon explained why he was there. Gadget had been seeing reports about some unknown hoodlum going around and freeing animals. The police had been confused as there were no signs of forced entry, no finger prints, or any other kind of clue that even remotely hint at who it was that could be doing all of this. Gadget saw nothing wrong in what Gideon was doing as hey! Animals had rights too! They didn't deserve to be subjected to untold testing, to be euthanized simply because there was too many of them, or to actually be eaten by some one's pet! All in all their conversation drifted to Gadget's own research and when the name NIMH came up, oh the fireworks! Gideon revealed that that was where he was from! And oh the questions Gadget had for him with each one only leading to more questions! How old was he? How smart was he? How long ago had been since his escape? And most of all, did he remember where the facility was?
But there were other questions that Gideon couldn't answer. Gadget now had her suspicions but she knew that there might be only one way to verify them. Her parents had never revealed much about their own past and she had a gut instinct that there was only one place where the answers to such might be. The very airfield where she had grown up and ironically the same place where her adventures as a rescue ranger had first began!
