Chapter 8: Dr. Frankenstein
Victoria “Dr. Frankenstein” Edwards was feeling hopeful, angry, ashamed, slightly nauseated, and anxious. All at the same time.
She didn’t much like having that many emotions to deal with at once on top of new normal suite of unpleasant sensations. At least she had almost forgotten her new nickname for now, at least ‘Dr. Frankenstein’ was a bit cooler than ‘Vikki the Vixen’
“Dammit” She grunted as she grabbed her bedside injector and jammed it into her leg. Step one for the day done. In a minute or two she’d be able to get up and get onto step two for the day.
Dragging herself down the hall of her small apartment, really just her office with a bed in it, she plopped herself in front of her personal espresso machine and staired at it as it bubbled. With how poorly she slept these days she really needed it. Once she had her 6 shot espresso she could start to focus on the issues of the day.
First her anger. She called up the security company she hired to watch this place to get an update.
“What do you mean there’s NOTHING on camera?” She would be yelling if her chest muscles had felt strong enough to project her voice hard enough, as it was she sounded calmer than she wanted to sound.
“Well send me the recording then” She flicked on her office computer and watched the feed. Sure, enough just like one of her fellow researchers reported, the man was walking down the hall alone when, something, attacked him. At least that’s what it looked like, the thing in question could not be seen though. It wasn’t off frame, it just wasn’t. The man appeared to be being attacked by empty air, the papers he was holding being scattered around as they fell.
Victoria frowned as she watched, her first notion was that the man was faking the attack, for some reason, but when it ended with him being picked up into the air and thrown into a closet there was little conclusion to come to other than that, somehow, there really was an invisible assailant.
The victim was far from the first person that was concerned about things being moved, or people rummaging through their offices when they were out, but this was hard evidence. Unless the man could hover himself into the air and launch himself into a broom closet without touching the ground, then he really was attacked by an invisible force no matter how nuts that sounded.
“OK so.. it can’t be seen. this… intruder” She said into the phone with her tired calmness, “How can we overcome that?” Surely it was a spy of some sort. None of the papers appeared to have been taken, but they were shifted around after the fight. The intruder could have used a camera of some sort to take pictures of the data though, make it unclear what he was looking for.
“I can see that its invisible, but is it just normal light? how about infrared camera’s? thermal?” She continued to security. “get whatever you can think of and put it on separate circuits form the regular ones, in case its somehow a hack.”
“Ghosts. Do. Not. Exist.” She said slowly, hoping the caffeine would help her headache soon, “Probably some sort of spy in a stealth suit”
“No, I’ve never heard of a stealth suit actually existing but unless you have any other ideas that aren’t totally insane…”
“yes, I approve the costs”
“Thank you” Victoria hung up and sighed, hopefully whatever this was would stop happening, hopefully it could be visible under thermals. Even if light went through it, if it was warm at all, it would emit light in the infrared spectrum. They could see that with the right cameras.
That was about all Victoria could do about the source of her anger thus far, and the shame would have to wait a few hours yet, so she decided to handle the nausea and grabbed her fleece blanked to cover herself as she shuffled off to an emergency chemical shower. It was all that was available and basically living at work led to one smelling less than pleasant.
Once clean, or clean-er at least, Victoria airdried in her office and tried to brush her matted and fading orange fur until she felt strong enough to drag her clothes on and staggered a bit out the door to her office to meet the first shift of employees.
Her anger and nausea handled the next one was her shame. The new girl, Atasi, was really promising as an employee and researcher, but wasn’t experienced with cadavers and Victoria had made her help last night. Victoria barely cared last night, but looking back the expression on the girl’s face was more than telling, she should really apologize.
Victoria found Atasi at her desk, and god if she didn’t look even worse than Victoria felt.
“morning my dear” Victoria said as happily as she could manage and sat down with Atasi, “I wanted to talk to you about…”
“Ya, I’m sorry I ran away last night” Atasi stammered out, “I know you needed my help and I…”
Victoria silenced her with a raised hand, “No I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked you to help with … with that. Its not your responsibility, but there wasn’t anyone else around and I lost tract of time.”
“That was. disturbing… when it moved”
“Sorry about that, I.. I won’t ask you to do that again.”
Atasi seemed to calm, but not all the way, and Victoria could hear some edge still in her voice when she spoke, “It’s ok. just warn me in advance so I can psych myself up.”
Victoria paused for awhile before asking, “Something else is bothering you isn’t it?”
“I’m fine, Ma’am” Atasi assured her, “Just need to focus on my job”
“Ok well I’ll leave you be, but you can tell me if you want, Oh and feel free to call me Vikki if you’d like” Victoria stook up to go, walking away intentionally slowly and had to suppress a smile when Atasi called out from behind her.
“Wait, uh, Vikki”
“What is it, dear?” Vikki said with concern turning back.
“Something…” Atasi seemed at a loss for words, “I had a break in last night”
“Oh I’m sorry to hear that, did you call the cops”
“No I didn’t”
“What? why ever not? if you were a victim of a crime then you should call them.. You can use our phones too if you’d like”
Atasi didn’t answer and just looked down quietly.
“I’m serious, Sweetie, We really should report crimes to…”
“They won’t believe me”
That shut Vikki up for a moment, “Won’t believe you”
“You won’t believe me either…”
Vikki sat back down and placed a hand on Atasi’s shoulder in an attempt to be comforting, “Maybe if its that nuts I can’t promise to believe you, but can promise not to judge you. You can tell me.”
“I had… a… I had a break in and fought with… an invisible person.”
In all of five minutes Atasi found herself whisked off to a private conference room with Vikki, a new nondisclosure agreement was shoved in her face, along with an upgrade to her security clearance.
“Ma’am?” Atasi asked, staring at her new red passkey that replaced the old blue one, “What is going on?”
In leu of answering, Victoria pressed play on the play button on the video feed.
After watching the video Atasi was far more willing to share everything that happened. Along with her data form the sensors. “Who the fuck is it? do you know?”
“I don’t know who this guy is, but we WILL investigate it. My best guess is a corporate spy with an experimental stealth suit of some sort.” Vikki explained, “Your sonar idea was nice. I’m getting thermal cameras instilled but I’ll look into the sonar thing too. We’ll catch this guy eventually.”
“Girl”
“huh?”
“The one in my room was a girl, not a guy”
“How could you tell?”
“Well, I couldn’t exactly see her, obviously, but while I was grabbing at her. I …” Atasi paused for a moment to hide a soft blush, “I’m pretty sure I grabbed a boob” Atasi explained, leaving out for now that the intruder felt like she might have been fully naked. Her boss thought that this was a person in a stealth suit, which would be contraindicated by that bit of info, and the last thing that Atasi wanted right now was to have her boss stop believing her.
“Huh. well either we have two of them or she is very strong, to throw my man like that” Vikki mused in thought. If there were two of them this would make things more complicated. but either way security would have to be amped up. turning back to Atasi, “Hey, Atasi. I’m not sure why this thing is surveilling you too, but I’ll gent some thermal cameras for your room too if you want.”
“Thanks… I’d like that. If I get to screen the feeds incase, they see me in… uh well”
“understood” Vikki said with a grin. “Whoever this is they’re an enemy of both of us, and we’ll get them together.
