I love Lurantis, but holy ass, its design is so hard to translate into a sphere like this. Its anatomy is the right mix between bug and humanoid that figuring out how it expands is difficult, and that pink dress thing it has is somehow even more problematic. I try to stick on-model whenever I can, but this pajama-wearing weirdo eventually made me decide that I couldn't do that and make it look good at the same time. I had to draw the line at some point.
Now, shortly before I decided to draw the blueberry bug, I ended up asking myself; "Why don't I draw front-view inflation more often?" It can't be that hard to answer, surely.
Well, to answer my own question, the reason is because it honestly feels a bit amateurish. I think in general, front angles don't offer as much of a challenge when it comes to drawing, especially when the character is in a completely neutral pose. That extends to inflation too, since there ends up being a lot of symmetry. If you don't care about the symmetry being off-putting, you can basically just draw one half of the blimp and mirror it for the other side. There also isn't as much potential for eye-catching perspective, and that makes it easy for the subject to look flat. That's a problem, considering inflation is about making things round, usually. I think it can help to tilt the subject so that the line of symmetry isn't completely vertical, as well as adding other details that make the left and right sides distinct. Front angle inflation can be done well, for sure, but artists who ONLY draw front angles and little else aren't going to be improving much overall, if you ask me.
That being said, Lurantis is difficult enough on its own that I was honestly slightly intimidated by the prospect of drawing it at a more complex angle. Maybe I'll take a crack at it in the future, when I'm not struggling so much with the base design, but for now, let this be a rare demonstration of Incidental drawing inflation from the front.
Wait, what was I meaning to talk about this whole time? ...oh, that's right. Lurantis is a big cutie, and insect girls are what steal my heart. Even if she's technically not actually a bug.
