RIP Frank Thorne
The art world lost a master, Frank Thorne. basically the creator of Marvel's Red Sonja.
This was a double whammy, Frank's wife , Marilyn , passed away six hours later.
Frank was one hell of an artist and inker. His work appeared all over, including Heavy Metal.
Digital work and Red Sonja by my partner in crime, Richard Konkle.

This was, indeed, the very thought that crossed my mind when I saw the online obit, and saw Red Sonja. (I wonder if the wife knew of her mate's passing. I can tell you a story of a family friend that quite literally turned his face to the wall after his wife passed, and died not long after.)
Thorne drew much, much more than Red Sonja during his 90 years, but nevertheless his 70's depiction of Marvel's 'She-Devil with a Sword' was energetic, erotic, inventive -- and deservedly definitive.
Remarkable also just how much artistic control Marvel gave him: rather than become just one cog in the comicbook production line, Thorne pencilled, inked, lettered and colored his Red Sonja pages -- and when Marvel was no longer willing to let him do all that, he quit, rightly.
R.I.P.

Thank you for sharing this sad news.
In reading some of the quick tributes from fellow artists that have already started to pour in, I was surprised to learn just how many iconic characters he had graced with his work, before moving to Red Sonja. And then after leaving how many more iconic characters he had created. I never realized that National Lampoons Danger Rangerette was one of his.
And of course, we can also see all the characters his work inspired, such as your own Red Shetland.
Believe it or now, Frank was actually the 2nd artist artist for Sonja, taking over for another legend Dick Giordano who drew her first Marvel appearance. But along with Roy Thomas' stories he defined the look for Sonja that continues to this day.
