A bit of vent art. I've been reading about the crisis in the Gulf with BP and frankly, I am sick to the back teeth of certain presidents and Congressmen trying to make us kowtow to them in rhetorical language. They aren't trying to hide the anti-British sentiments at all. I admit Obama may be under pressure and that's understandable but why the virulent hate?
I could rant for ages about how wrong it all is (I'm not terribly happy with BP either, but at least they've tried to stop the leak. I can't imagine how tough it is... After this, they'd better keep an eye on safety, no cutbacks. I'm looking at you, Mister CEO) but I'd end up being excessively political on a predominant American site. Just so you are aware... I'm not against Americans or the Preseident. It's the reaction from him and many Americans who say the dreaded 'British Petroleum'. It has not even been British for years now!
Ergh.... I'll stop there. But suffice to say I did feel a surge of pride in the country of my birth (Originally from Cheshire, but living in Wales) and I wanted to convey that. I seriously do NOT mean to offend at all but it just feels like it's suddenly bad to say innocently 'I'm from the UK' without being forced to gargle oil-laced humble pie.
Again, I apologise. If you -watch because of this... I could understand that *shrug* Politics is emotional, not easy to discuss without ranting, and I give you guys every right to tear my head off to say I'm wrong, or to just leave quietly. If you do comment though, a modicum of respect. It's just common sense and facilitates debate more than shouting at me :P

It IS pretty pathetic... How a "certain president" keeps pointing fingers, but doesn't DO a damn thing about it. Britain, our most powerful ally, has been terribly mistreated by that certain president. At the beginning of his term, a bust of Winston Churchill, which had been passed down from presidency to presidency, a symbol of the American-British alliance, was unceremoniously sent back to Britain, as if it meant nothing. And, now that an Obamaphile is no longer Prime Minister, that certain president gives Britain the same regard as it does Israel- just below the regard he gives to the people that want to KILL us.
Wha? As if the present of a boxed set of DVDs to our then PM wasn't enough, he returned the bust? Apparently, he is said never to have forgiven the UK for its past treatment of slaves since part of his parentage is Kenyan. I am not sure how far this is true (I can never quite trust the stance on the Sky News website) but if true, I'm more convinced than ever that the Special US/UK relationship is nothing more than a convenience.
David Cameron is much more level headed than Gordon Brown was. Doesn't look like he'll use the US as a support crutch much. I wonder if he'll swing to Europe despite his dislike of the EU :P

I hope he doesn't; I havcen't heard much, but I like Cameron thus far... but, I wouldn't trust the EU at all. Personally, I hope the US/UK connection stays strong... I mean, in a sense, it's almost familial. The majority of the USA has its roots in the UK; and, we based all the reasons for our independence of off British Philosophers. Our connection was so strong, even though we just fought a war between each other, the US preferred trade with Britain than our war ally, Frane, after the Revolution. It truly is a pity, from America's stance, that people like Obama have soured relations so much.
Oh, I'm sure we're to blame too. I mean, BP, it did once stand for British Petroleum but then it became more... international. That and I do seriously think they can do a lot more. A company called Ultra Green has developed a tissue like 'mop' for lack of a better word to soak up the oil but as yet BP has yet to even master getting that 'wedding ring' about the pipe. No interest yet but we can hope. I think the execs need time out from their cosy little worlds to get out there, but that's my inner socialist.
Just so you too are aware, this isn't a hate campaign. If you want to see misplaced anger in action, I'd say that the redtops do a more than adequate job of disseminating anti-American feelings. They ragged on England's game losses with the ferocity of a rabid dog so if Obama puts a step wrong, they'll leap on it.
Let's face it, both sides are wrong in many ways. But my main point is that a key political figure, namely Barack Obama, is getting very personal and possibly showing how green he still is behind the ears in political terms. Granted, we have done no better at times but I admire David Cameron (Gosh, never thought I'd say that!) for how calm he's being in this.
I'd best stop. I've just come in from work and to be honest, I'm glad my stance, however aggressive it looked, didn't drive anyone away. Anyways, discussions welcome but in the bounds of respect :P
