This commission was actually a gift from some friends of mine, and as a result, got a picture of Mercedes from
rjbartrop. The idea was inspired by the opening scene for my story Mercedes: Mardi Gras, where the kitsune deliberately put on an old Japanese kitsune mask while getting ready for a Mardi Gras parade as another layer of misdirection on her true form. It's not exactly the outfit I originally had for her in that story, but she's a little more recognizable in this sort of dress anyway.

Yes, the idea for this came up when I was working on the [/url=/view/36903702/]Mardi Gras[/i] story, because wearing a trenchcoat during a Mardi Gras parade would really make one stand out, so had to come up with something that would draw less attention during the parade, which is obviously different from what would draw less attention normally.

The story I wrote that this was based on was written before I started with the Thursday Prompt. A convention was using 'Mardi Paws' as a theme, and it seemed obvious to me that shapeshifters and spirits would love masquerade parties, so things just kind of ran from there, after having left Mercedes here without a new story for over a decade.
I'll admit that the idea of a vixen wearing a kitsune mask was at least partly inspired by an old picture by Susan Seddon Boulet called 'Fox Maiden'.
