A Thursday Prompt story

Prompt: weed
The sun felt great on my back as my trowel dug into the space between the plants and loosened the dandelion. I had to get the roots, or the stupid thing would just grow back. Once I was sure, I laid the trowel aside and used my paws.
The dandelion came out of the ground intact, and I tossed it into the bucket. Like the rest of the plants in the basket, they were destined to be chopped up and fed to the compost heap so that they could eventually nourish something more desirable.
I settled back on my haunches and looked around, rather pleased with myself. You’d think that a badger would be a natural gardener, but let’s not get into stereotypes, please. Some folks are, some not. Best gardener I ever saw was a deer.
She grew the most beautiful roses.
After taking a few breaths, a drink of water from the bottle I had sitting nearby, and stretching to ease my back, I returned to my chore. I’m glad I chose to get this done in the morning, partly because it’d be too hot after lunchtime, but mostly because it rained last night and the ground was a little looser.
More dandelions, with things like chickweed and spurge mixed in, were growing between the plants on the rest of this row. I crawled toward them on paws and knees, dragging the trowel and bucket behind me. I wanted to get this done, and there was no use procrastinating.
I worked methodically, taking a break every now and then, and after another hour the garden was completely clear of anything apart from the plants I wanted to see growing in it. I stood up, stretching and leaning back – my back’s getting a little old for this. I gathered up the bucket, now quite full, and paused to sniff one of the plants.
Mm, nicely pungent, and after collecting the trowel and my water, I headed for the compost heap. Before I dumped the stuff into the chopper, I glanced back at my garden with a mixture of pride and anticipation.
This was some of the dankest shit I’d ever managed to grow, and more than enough to share.
