Well, the best way to describe the difference between the dem and repub parties is that the dems are a group of INDIVIDUALS, some bad, some good, and none bound by a solid ideology (which also means they break apart more often than coming together, sadly). Republicans on the other hand are like a hive-mind in which every member is dead set on the same goals and ideology. The old, "If you aren't one of us, screw you!" mentality.
But anyway this is getting too complicated for a picture of a green cartoon cat and mouse so...

It's easy to do during times like these, but that's too much generalization. Back during the Clinton years the dems were just as interested in deregulating the financial system (AND getting their hands in your pockets) as the repubs, and they have to answer to that as well. But I think a few too many of the modern dems (that have gotten their seats SINCE then) get branded that way when it isn't necessarily true. I'd say about 1/3 of them are actually, truthfully trying to fight for the lil guy, another third are currently only acting "good" because they fear losing their seats, and the last third are the usual amoral dickwads.
Although I approved of Clinton during his years in the White House - it would be hard not to throughout the witch hunt to have him impeached for jerking off in the bathroom, if that's what it took - as time goes by he looks less impressive to me. He was a Democrat technically, but most of this platform was moderate Republican at best.
The energy/turn and turns/tech display in the SE panel when you contemplate switching to Free Market is sooooo deceptive... because it doesn't show you all the bases that will have drone riots the very next turn if you don't take drastic Specialist measures, which may result in MUCH less energy taken in, not to mention possible starvation.
In all my games, I've actually never taken a turn switched to Free Market; I've only ever switched, looked at the Base panel to see the array of drones that'd result, clicked through to a few bases to view the reasons, and quietly switched back before the end of the turn to get a refund. (But not before contacting Morgan and shmoozing him up--I WAS playing the Peacekeepers, after all. )
