Bomani is a very prominent figure in lion kingdom history, having been born during a time when prides were much smaller and lion society largely followed what would later be called the Old Ways. (i.e. new males killing cubs of other males, lions breeding with each other regardless of relation, etc.) He and his brother Askari were born in the Ndona Pride, a group of lions who made their home around a magnificent rock formation that was led by a lion named Abasi. He and his brother were also very fortunate, as unlike most other pride leaders of that era, their father was very active in his son's lives, teaching them in the arts of tracking, hiding, fighting and hunting, preparing them for the day when they would eventually have to leave their birth pride and claim a territory of their own.
But one day, when Bomani and Askari were in their teens, their content lifestyle came to a halt when a vicious rogue male named Alamgir showed up and challenged Abasi to a mashindano. Bomani was sure that he would win, as he had seen him successfully driven off other males before. But much to his horror, Abasi is killed, and before he knows it the male takes over the territory and starts to kill off his younger siblings. Fearing for their lives, Bomani and Askari have no other choice but to flee.
After that day the two brothers spent their time wandering alone as rogues. During their travels, they came across several prides that they could've easily taken over, and while Askari is eager to challenge their lead males, Abasi doesn't share his enthusiasm. Witnessing the deaths of their father and siblings had deeply affected him, making him question why lion society had to be so cruel. Was all this killing really necessary? Askari doesn't quite feel the same way and the two brothers end up going their separate ways after having a heated argument.
Bomani doesn't have must trouble surviving on his own, having remembered all the skills that his late father had taught him. One day, while out looking for food, he comes across a partially eaten gazelle carcass. Having been unable to catch any food lately, he decides to feast on it, but this proves to be a mistake when a leopard shows up. Apparently this carcass was his kill, and he clearly wasn't very happy about a rogue lion eating his food.
Bomani is attacked by the leopard but then ends up being rescued by a lioness named Ghalyela. After hearing that he had no place to call home, Ghalyela invites him to her home in the Grass Walls, a place that's home to many mandrills, including her adopted mother Hekima. During his stay, Bomani befriends Ghalyela and learns of the ways of her adopted family. He is told about legends of the deceased living on as stars in the night sky, looking down on their living family members. This brought comfort to Bomani, making him believe that, in a way, his beloved father was still with him.
During his stay at the Grass Walls with Ghalyela, Bomani befriends a hornbill named Kujua, who agrees to fly over to Bomani's old home to find out information about his old pride in exchange for some fruit. It's from him that he learns that Alamgir was abusing his power as the pride's leader, hogging all the food and water to himself and picking fights with the lionesses over the tiniest of things. And in one of those fights he had apparently badly crippled one of his sisters, leaving her unable to hunt again. Bomani felt that he couldn't just stand by and let this beast hurt his family. He had to do SOMETHING.
Bomani spends the next few months training, making himself stronger for when he he had to face Alamgir. When he feels that he's ready, Bomani journeys back to his home along with Ghalyela, Hekima and Kujua in tow. Many of the lions in the Ndona were surprised by his arrival, as male lions usually never return to their natal prides after they're old enough to leave. But still Bomani challenges Alamgir to a mashindano, which the fiersome lion accepts. The battle is long and fierce, but in the end Bomani manages to overpower Alamgir and win the fight, after which all the other lions chase him out of the pride.
After healing from his injuries that he sustained in the battle, Bomani declares that from this day forward, he will declare that the barbaric ways of lion society shall be done away with, that male lions will no longer have to challenge other males and kill their cubs. Bomani declares that he shall now be the pride's king, and as his first act of mercy, he spares Alamgir's cubs and allows them to live safely in the pride. And since there were no other unrelated females in the pride, Bomani takes Ghalyela as his mate and declares her his queen. Kujua the hornbill becomes Bomani's majordomo, a steward tasked with advising and reporting to the King. Ghalyela's adopted mother Hekima is granted the title of Royal Mjuzi, an individual responsible for healings and caring for the pride's inhabitants and serving as the royal family's adviser. After his first litter of cubs are born, Bomani's brother Askari ends up returning home from a life-changing journey of his own, having mastered an amazing power along the way. He ends up forming a team of lions tasked with with protecting the Ndona Pride, now renamed the Pridelands, from potential invaders, and the two brothers work together to turn this new kingdom into a paradise. Bomani and Ghalyena teach their six children the values of their society, and when they're fully grown four of them desperse to found new prides or introduce other prides to this new way of lion society, while his oldest cubs Kwanzaa and Pili stay and eventually succeeds their father and uncle as the pride's new monarch and guard leader.
Bomani ends up dying peacefully from old age with a smile on his face, happy that he and his family had changed lion society for the better.
EDIT: Changed Bomani's eye color. I've decided that Askari's weird Shan Yu eyes were probably a trait that the early Pridelanders had, so I decided to give them to Bomani.
