[Short Story] "A Secret Boss"
Figured I'd release it, cuz fuck it why not
The Secret Boss
The city reveals itself in a glaring early twilight during sundown, and work hours are over for the day. There shows a suburb where an exhausted woman is walking home from work. It was nothing more than another day. A day that is fairly mediocre and neither awful nor amazing. Her name is Shiela, and she has mid-length red hair. The kind of hair that resembles the current twilight sky. Shiela opens her mailbox and discovers something unusual. Upon taking out the mail itself, the object is a thick but fairly small package, but the address is unknown and blank. Nevertheless, Shiela walks into her house and heads upstairs to her bedroom. She heads over there to get some rest as she is too tired to want to open the package. She falls fast asleep.
The next day, morning glows through the horizon of the city and then into the suburbs as the sun begins to rise within the distant line of the celestial sky. The alarm clock suddenly goes off and Shiela awakens swiftly. Shiela is then doing her morning routines before heading out to work, but not until she decides to grab the peculiar package to check out what it is. She steps outside and locks her door, walking on her way to her car. Suddenly, she stops for a moment to check out and open the mail package. Upon ripping it out, she discovers it is a black book! However, it is mostly blank, and confusion sets into her mind about why she received such a package. She soon notices some faint writing within the back of the fabric, saying "Please return to owner. Sent to the wrong address". Before she could do anything else, she spots a strange-looking man in a dark-colored detective suit from more than several feet away, saying "Halt!! That belongs to someone I know!"
Shiela turns around as she is then nervous, looking at him with his menacing glare from a distance. The woman is unable to see exactly what the man looks like. As she begins to tremble, the man raises his arms and his cloak begins moving like the wind is blowing, harrowing and scaring the red-haired woman in her daily office suit. In a moment's panic, she then rushes into her car and starts driving off, not believing what just happened. During the driving, Shiela notices the man from her car mirror, taking off and flying towards her from many feet away! This causes her to drive faster as she panics and then runs into ongoing traffic, driving nearly out of control. The car was swaying and wavering around the roads as the cloaked flying man continues to chase her, causing a lot of other cars in the road to jerk around or stop so suddenly.
A few more minutes later, she parks into a public garage she's familiar with. On her way to work, Shiela then runs and rapidly closes the door. Then she runs to the stairwell that spans several floors above to get closer to her office building. As the strange man is trying to catch up from a distance, she hears his presence, quickly opens the stairwell door only to find herself in a radiant white spacious area she's never seen before! Shiela gasps, but then quickly tries to close the door before the man could come, then the door suddenly disappears, being even more astonished than she already is. The woman carrying the black book turns around to see that there is a colorful, spiral crystal stairwell fading in to show itself in front of her from a small distance as the glowing white area begins to dim further and further into what looks like a cosmic anomaly around her in this mystical, other-dimensional environmental realm.
Everything is quiet and feels hazy, but Shiela reluctantly and cautiously walks to the strange spiral stairwell slowly and upwards. As she continues to walk more and more with each minute of her going slightly faster in momentum, she finally reaches the top to find another door, and it glows in a pale ivory crystal-like appearance. As she slowly opens the door with her book under her other arm, another ray of bright lights line up before her eyes. The place reveals a pale office room, floating way up high. The ceiling appears to have bright blue-glowing incandescent lights and a marble black table in front of her. A hooded man with a black, cosmic cloak arranged behind his snazzy office chair, awaits her. This mysterious man wears a tuxedo and sits with his elbows on the table as if the dressed figure was waiting for someone to come in this whole time. The way he dresses indicates his authoritative demeanor. This new strange man is nearly certainly a CEO or a boss in his own dimension.
"Uhh, excuse me, sir. What is this place and who are you?" the red-haired human woman asks. "Hello. I've been waiting for someone to retrieve my black book, for it was mistakenly sent away. I meant to send it to someone else, so I figured I'd try again. My apologies. You are a person from Earth, in your realm, yes?" the strangely cloaked, suited man implores. "Oh! Um, yes! I have the black book you were talking about, it's right here. Take it!" But as the man gets up from his chair to stand across her, he exclaims and opens one of his hands with his palm facing upwards, gravitating the book swiftly with his own kinetic magic. "Ah, thank you very much. But tell me, did you read anything from this book? The contents here are rather classified material and I'm afraid I cannot allow anyone to know such things, neither shall I show them."
After a small moment, Shiela modestly proclaims, "No sir, but I did open the front cover out of blind curiosity to find out there was money. But I know it wasn't mine, so I didn't take it. As for your book, I didn't read any of it. I refrained before I went any further. I just wanted to get to work and I think I'm already quite late." But suddenly, sounds of footsteps echo louder and louder, and the other odd man in a dark detective outfit opens the door and slams it shut, breathing heavily and panting. Quickly, the chaser shouts "You! I wanted to return the book to him, lady! You don't belong in this realm!" but then the boss across the room interjects him and hollers "Silence! I led her on purpose since I sensed she had the book. Now go on your way back to your duties today, mister." Subsequently, the cloaked man who chased Shiela emits a disgruntled sigh, but she places her hand on his shoulder gently and says "It's okay. I think it was just a misunderstanding and I freaked out. I'm sorry," she consoles. The tired man smiles mildly and utters "Well lady, you look mighty fine, so while I had fun chasin' you, it's been nice meetin' ya! However, you won't remember us when this is over! But we will, so adios!" and then disappears like a whirlwind of the sparkling sand, as he now gets back to work in his world.
Shiela exhales in awe and blushes mildly by his flattery "Wow!" but then gasps frantically and says "Oh no! I'm gonna be super late now!! Sir!" Then the man exclaims, "Oh woman, time does not pass at the same pace as in your dimension, human! It's much slower and works differently. But I digress, I appreciate your honesty. There are no questions there. I shall give you the money that's in the book as a reward for your favor and your proper handling of the situation. In our world, we can visually and physically convert any currency from your world into ours, and vice versa. That's what I originally intended to do later today, as it's pay-day for me and my fellow subordinate workers. But that's not for your concern. Take care and have a great day, human!" The entire room begins to slowly fade as the money flies to her hand, and he wisps like sand.
As Shiela closes her eyes briefly from the phenomenon, she reopens them and briefly blinks, wondering if she was hallucinating but almost immediately recognizes where she's at and walks to work as usual. The memories of this morning's events are unknown to her, and the book continues to exist in the other realm. The money, however, still rests in her wallet. She goes through the walkway high up in the building, and the next door automatically opens and shuts, sliding closed behind her, who experienced supernatural events.
