It's only a crutch if you can't punt. So long as you can punt, man, you're safe. And you know your shapes. It's good to be concerned about it but me, as an outsider looking in, I'm not worried abou' choo.
You'll know when you've crossed the line, truly: the folks that have will carry over any compositional errors in the photo, won't adjust for lens distortion, their stuff goes stiff, loses volume, and that Giant Sucking Sound is the sound of their imagination going down the drain. All of which can be reversed, but they've got to wake up first. Some of 'em never do. :P
