"Listen, Bay," Constantine said sternly, looking Bayusha in the eye as she walked. "As soon as we find Abby, we're getting out of here before we break more stuff, okay?!"
Bayusha's ability to play innocent was starting to become pierced by Constantine's glare. "I swear, darling, I told them all they need to know," she said sheepishly. "I wonder what went wrong..."
"Well I think they could probably use a few more lessons in your little crash course there, Bay... and I do mean CRASH course..." Constantine snorted.
The Brachio snorted as well, rattling the Compy's footing. "Very funny..." she said, rolling her eyes.
Constantine sighed and turned forward again. "Abby!" he called. "Where are you? You doing okay over-"
"Shh!" Bayusha interrupted, having noticed something.
Constantine looked back at her, puzzled. Bayusha pointed across the way, and Constantine followed the direction of her giant hand. There ahead was the blue and indigo tip of a feathery tail pointed upwards. He could also hear voices coming from the area from which the tail rose above the tree line. "... Wait, what's she doing...?" Constantine whispered.
"We find out, darling," Bayusha replied. "But I wish not to interrupt her, so I use stealth."
"... How...?" Constantine asked flatly.
"Like so. Watch head, darling." Bayusha slowly and carefully bent down on all fours and crawled forward towards the trees. Constantine was wondering what she meant by "Watch head" until he saw the canopy of trees approaching them as Bayusha crawled forward. Constantine gasped and ducked to avoid conking his head against any branches as the Brachio buried her face within the trees. After extending her neck as far as she could go, she slowly lifted her head through the canopy, her eyes and muzzle level just above the tree line, enough for Constantine to get a good view as well, and Constantine was NOT expecting what he saw next.
The Pteryx was lying on the ground (making a crater in the process) next to the footpath. Some tiny folk were standing in front of her, talking to her. Constantine glanced back into Bayusha's eye with a bemused look, and Bayusha crossed her eyes to stare back at him with similar sentiments. They listened in.
"Gosh, you're like... HUGE, for a Pteryx, aren't you?" one of the them said.
Abequa snorted. "Eh, I get that a lot," she said looking away.
"Well... how does it make you feel?" another asked.
"Mmf... like I don't fit, most of the time," Abequa replied with a sigh. "... What's it to you lot, though?" she asked, eying them suspiciously.
"I mean..." the third one shifted, trying to choose his words carefully. "I don't think you should feel like an outcast just because of what others may say."
"Hm?" Abequa raised a brow. "... You say that like it's easy..."
"Well, no, it's not," the little one admitted. "It's easy to feel as though you stick out because of these perceptions... but at the very least, I don't think you should allow that to make you feel ashamed of what you are, because honestly, from THIS point of view, I think you're an extraordinary creature."
Abequa narrowed her eyes, but before she could answer, another one chimed in. "Me too honestly! That's why I couldn't help but look at you... though, uh... I shouldn't stare, so I apologize."
The Pteryx stared at them for what seemed like an eternity, making the three little lizards a little nervous, until she finally broke tension. "... I'll let you off," she grunted, "but only because you didn't make fun of me... or take a snapshot of my butt or something..."
The small ones all breathed a sigh of relief. "Well, listen, uh..." one spoke, pausing as he wasn't sure how to address her.
Abequa thought for a moment, and then decided, 'why not? They've earned it.' "It's Abequa."
"Ah," the lizard replied. "Well then, Abequa, first of all, that's a lovely name, and secondly, it's a pleasure to meet you!" He extended his hand upwards, as if offering a handshake. "We don't get many big visitors like yourself!"
Abequa then did something quite rare for her. She found herself extending her claw down to him, and as he touched it, she gently wiggled it, the best "handshake" she could return without causing serious injuries to them. "Well... my friend invited me here for the first time... Maybe I'll come by again sometime," she said, as the side of her beak curled up slightly into a rare smirk.
Back in the tree canopy, Constantine was at a loss for words, but watching gave him probably the warmest feeling he had had all day. He turned to Bayusha. "... You know what... we can let her have more time," he said. "What do you say?"
"Excellent idea, little biter," Bayusha murmured. "We leave dear Abby to new little friends, yes?" She slowly pulled her head backwards out of the trees.
"I think she's the only one who passed your course with flying colors," Constantine mused, "... aside from the crater she left anyway..."
Part five!
Abequa isn't much of a conversationalist usually, but this small group of smallies seems to have gained her interest, as she has gained theirs, and for once... it's actually positive interest.
Enjoy!
